Most of the Plex library I have access to is encoded in H.264 High 10 (10bit) so Android player always transcodes:
I’m not against transcoding or anything, server is apparently powerful enough to handle it so no worries there. My question is about colors - I was wondering if transcoding can affect them in any way? I read it’s possible to get that “washed out” look. I just wanted to be sure…sorry if that sounds stupid lol.
Thanks
Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version#: 8.5.2.20133
Set the behavior for Burn Subs in the app to ‘Image Formats Only’.
Maybe those ASS subs don’t need a Burn (transcode).
And enable Display Information in the app settings - then if it’s transcoding bring up the OSD and look at Playback Info to see if you can fix the reason for the transcode…
If you set the target transcoding bitrate too low, the picture can get blurry.
What you may have seen mentioned in other threads is about transcoding HDR content (which is also using 10 bit color, but is addditionally defined as being in a different color space [sometimes called “wide-gamut”]).
Currently, Plex cannot preserve the color space information while transcoding, nor can it perform an adaption of the color space. Which leads to this “washed out” look, where colors lose their intensity.
But it won’t occur with H.264 10 bit content, because this is still using the traditional, “non-HDR” color space.
HDR content comes in H.265 / HEVC.
