I’m not a neat person at all when it comes to my PC. I just throw whatever I want to watch into my downloads folder, and empty that when it’s too full.
The anime I watch often follows a naming scheme like this:
[ReleaseGroup] Show Title - 99 [1080p].mkv
And this seems to really confuse Plex.
I tried to add my Downloads folder into Plex in TV show mode, and it acted as if there were no video files in that folder at all. Give or take a few differences (some add additional [brackets] with things like audio info, or sometimes there’s a checksum at the end), anime file names are almost always like this, so I was surprised that it wouldn’t recognize anything at all.
For the time being, I put my library in movie mode and it works fine, but it won’t group episodes of the same show together. It’s a bit unfortunate.
I really wish you’d find a way to improve this. I’d like some auto-organization of my shows without having to rename and organize things I’ll delete soon anyway.
Plex is locked in at TVDB or TMDB.
If you don’t match with the database there’s not much Plex can do – at this time.
It’s a bit easier to use the Personal Media Agent:
Fix Match/Search Options/Agent/Personal Media.
That way you can have a ‘fairly chaotic’ structure system, but it still must adhere to general TV Show Structuring. In the end it’ll be easier to make a TV Show out of it than an Other Videos Library will.
You’ll have to hand edit, of course, but when you use Personal Media Plex will stop trying to match it - and blowing your edits every time it does.
plex is not designed for anime and if you have nested folders it wont work correctly. they need a proper anidb.net integration or use one of the third party plugins while they last before plex pulls the plug
