Why does Plex deal with Anime so poorly

Why does PLEX deal with anime so poorly?

“Ghost in the Shell (1995)” is different than “Ghost in the Shell The New Movie (2015)” but PLEX cannot differentiate them from one another and instead shows two version of Ghost in the Shell (1995) despite exact file structure and naming of file structure and files themselves. However it can get can get the difference between “Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence (2004)” and “Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (2008)”?

It cannot get the difference between correctly named “Evangelion (2007)” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)”. Why is it that PLEX can get the difference between incorrectly named “Ghost in the Shell - Arise” and “Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex” but not correctly named files / file structure? PLEX currently sees the “Evangelion (2007)” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)” as two versions of NGE episode 21, three version of NGE episode 22, two versions of NGE episode 23 and then Evangelion 3.33 (2012) as a completely separate NGE episode 27

  1. What do I need to do in order to make plex understand that items in different folders with different names and different date are not the same?

  2. What can software improvements are planned that will help take care of this type of issue?

Thank you

Plex doesn’t know about Anime.
It only knows about ‘tv shows’ and ‘movies’.
And what you have there is a combination of both and is violating the rather strict rules for tv shows.

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

and search the forum for additional examples how to deal with anime ‘peculiarities’

Looks like the system could only see the Evangelion as movies not as a series (not the best outcome but acceptable I guess)

“Ghost in the Shell” parent folder is under a structure that is linked to a Library for for anime movies and the Anime Series folder is linked to a Library setup as TV Shows.

I checked and confirmed proper naming of Files / Folders of for “Ghost in the Shell (1995)” and “Ghost in the Shell The New Movie (2015)”. PLEX Dance did not solve the issue. Any further suggestions?

I set up a different library for anime and use a separate agent/scanner than TV shows. It uses anidb rather than thetvdb. I don’t know how it would work in your specific case but it works well for my purposes. I use it just for series but I think there is a Movies option as well.

Agent: HamaTV
Scanner: Absolute Series Scanner

If you search the forums you should find a post on how to set it up.

I’m trying to set up Neon Genesis Evangelion in Plex. I have the “Platinum” DVD collection, which has episodes 1 through 26, as well as a director’s cut of episodes 21 - 24. TVDB does not list separate director’s cuts. Episodes 21 - 24 are listed only once.

The only mention of director’s cuts I can find in the Plex docs is specific to movies, and says:

This feature [Multi-Version Movies] is not intended for situations where you might have, for instance, both a “theatrical” and “director’s cut” version of a movie. … Those situations are best handled by Splitting the movie into separate library items.

So what is the right way to put these in Plex? If I name the files exactly after what TVDB says then I end up with 4 cases of two files needing to have the same filename.
