Handling of editions vs. Versions

The Play Version prompt doesn’t really help.

Take for instance this:

Which of these versions is the Special Edition, which one is the Extended edition?
Which one is the theatrical release?

Even if I’ve named the files with {Special Edition} it doesn’t show here

For that to work I need to find all movies Plex has merged, Go and rename all files and then split them.

I’d rather not have four posters of the Abyss. I want one poster of Abyss and be able to select what version I want from there.

The fact that they don’t show runtime or any part of the filename is just bad design.

No, you are just using the feature in a way it’s not intended.

Versions don’t differ in runtime, but only in resolution, bitrate, aspect ratio or such. However we can agree, that the info in the versions screen could be better, as they lack stuff like apect ratio, HDR or audio tracks, that would be valid differences between versions.

The feature is that Plex doesn’t work. It bunches ordinary versions with Extended versions and it’s a pain to Split Apart… then Merge the right versions again.

It would be so much easier if the Play Version actually showed what the difference was.
Kind of like the search results does it

But that still isn’t enough information as @hilldog1378 stated.

It won’t do that if you stick to the naming convention for different-quality versions vs. different cuts/editions.

I’m not going to have different movie folders for different versions when all other media managers can handle them to be in the same folder.

I have two files that are set to be extended version in the example. Not by filename but in the metadata in Plex.
It still bunches then together.

You don’t need different movie folders for correct edition handling.

Didn’t I just explain to you how I have chosen editions inside of Plex? And how Plex still merges these editions with the non-edition?

Do you have Plex Pass?

Yes. Life Time since 2012 or something like that.
Which you can see right below my name

You need to review the naming standards plex has, {edition-Special} is the correct format See https://support.plex.tv/articles/multiple-editions/

Why have the GUI to change Editions if you still need to rename the files?

I’ve set the Editions in the Plex GUi which is connected to the Plex database as you can see with my screenshots. After doing that, the naming of the files shouldn’t matter at all.
This is just one example of the Search GUI not showing all results.

I have several copies of the same movie in different languages and Plex bunches these results together too. The naming scheme doesn’t help since the Movies are separate entities in the library but in the search results they are not.
