How can I display the name of the video edition in "Play version"?

Hi,

Maybe this is not the right place for this but I’d like to know if there’s any way to solve this issue:

I have several personal videos that I edited which have different editions:
20250614_Expression {edition-full version}.mp4
20250614_Expression {edition-short version}.mp4

I did the naming following the instructions here and here.

For convenience, I merged the files in Plex so that I can select “Play version” in the settings and choose which edition I want to play, but then it only displays the bitrate and resolution:

Is there a way to display what is specified between { } ?

Editions are only available in movie libraries that use the modern metadata agent.
I don 't think you can use them in an Other Videos library.

Take the detail info out of the curly brackets, so you get two distinct items.
(Or Split them again.)

The only way to group items in a Personal Video library is to use Collections, AFAIK.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Same goes in the movie library, I have this movie in two editions:

I also merged them into one file, and when I select “Play version”, there’s only bitrate and resolution:

What’s the point of merging the files if there’s no way to properly choose between versions?

Just don’t.

Thanks, I hope the dev team can do something about this at some point.

Adding to Otto’s feedback:
editions and versions are different things:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/multiple-editions/
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381043-multi-version-movies/

Editions are for different cuts of a movie while versions are meant for different resolutions or encoding formats. Merging them for convenience makes Plex think they are one and the same movie.

Kinda makes senses when you see it that way.

It’s not a matter of perspective.
If you Merge two items, they take on both the same identity. (Whichever you selected first, before issuing the Merge command.)
Which means: even though you named them as different editions, after merging them, they are both the same edition.

Okay, that’s a good point.
Hopefully there will be a way to give a visible name to versions in the future.
