Hang with recent upates at 33%

I started having problems with 4G+ sized files at 1080p in MKV format recently. It worked fine up until about a week or so ago.

What would happen is the video would start… I would watch it come up to 33%… sit there for 15 or so seconds and then jump to start playing. After a minute or so, it would halt and go back to the loading % overlay. Going to the 33%, waiting 15-30 seconds and then start playing again. This would go on for 5-7 minutes and then eventually plex would just kick out as unable to play.

After a ton of testing, I narrowed it down to an issue with the Roku Plex player and the setting “Local Playback” speed under 8Mbps 1080p. If I go above this to say 10 or 12Mbps, the Roku now has problems playing it back.

NOTE: I have run the Roku with Plex backend for over a year with the setting at 12Mbps with no problems.

  • Roku 3 - Serial Number 4124DS011932
  • Plex App on Roku - version 4.5.2

Server:

  • Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
  • Plex Media Server 1.3.3.3148-b38628e

You might have success by setting the transcode buffer to a larger size:

Is this just happening with the Roku Plex app, or can you duplicate this on other players?
