"Hardware Accelerator failed to decode picture" for MKV on 1.41.4.9380 / Win 10 22H2 / i7-4765T

Server Version#:1.41.4.9380 / Windows 10 22H2
Player Version#: Chrome & Firefox. haven’t tested LG TV plugin (though problem likely to persist there I suspect…)

Intel i7-4765T @ 4/8 core, 2ghz. 16GB RAM.

I’ve noticed that video files (MKV, predominantly DVD rips using MakeMKV) won’t play in the new version of plex, with the console reporting hardware acceleration decoding failure

If I disable hardware acceleration —Intel HD Graphics 4600 i.e., Intel Quicksync on-die GPU - then the MKV plays, though obviously CPU usage hits 100%. Ive downgraded to a previous version (1.41.2.92), re-enabled hardware decoding and everything’s fine again; the CPU maxes at about 20% and the GPU fires up to maybe 75%, so all as expected…

Has the new version dropped support for hardware decoding on older CPU’s ?

I have the same issue, hw transcoding broken in both 1.41.4.xxxx releases. (hevc and h264) Windows server 2025 with 8th gen Intel. Tested all possible setting combinations didn’t find any working combo.

Rolling back to the latest 1.41.3 release working without issues (hevc en h264 hw transcoding both work).

No. Can you please provide PMS Logs?

Can you share one of these files with me over DM?

yes, but itll be a 5GB file though!

@alkjones

This should be fixed in the current beta, 1.41.4.9463.

FIXES:

  • (Transcoding) HW transcodes would fail on older intel igpus (PM-2756)

I installed the current beta on a 4790K based desktop. It used the HD4600 graphics to transcode MPEG2 to H.264.

I’m also getting problems with intel CPU’s, but my problem is hardware decode.

Hardware encoding is working fine, but the decode part is being done on software instead of using quicksync and it’s taxing my cpu needlessly.

This is on an intel core ultra 5 125H with intel Arc graphics on windows 11 24h2.

Gpu Driver version: 32.0.101.6559

Plex Version: 1.41.5.9522

Got the same problem with 1.41.4.9463 release.
No hw decoding (both H264 or HEVC) on UHD630 (i9-9900k) with old (26.20.x) or newer drivers (31.0.101)
Reverted to 1.41.3.9314 hw decoding work flawlessly.

I tried that but I’ve got the same problem: no hardware decode.

I’ll try to tag someone from plex. This is making me unable to use plex at the moment.

@Atomatth

@Feanorl Thanks for the logs. I’m assuming that you have your ARC card selected as your Hardware transcoding device. Does this issue happen when your CPU’s iGPU is selected?

@simonx could you share your PMS logs as well?

Check this post for a working beta version.

I tested it and can confirm it works. They will probably get the fixes in 1.41.6 if no major issues pop up.

@Atomatth Yes, my arc is selected, and it’s my igpu.

The new intel ultra CPU’s igpu is an Arc integrated gpu. When I talk about the ARC I’m talking about my igpu.

I tested this and it didn’t work.

Ahh ok I was misunderstanding. Thanks!

@Feanorl can you test on this build again? Reproduce the issue and grab your PMS logs while running this build.

@Atomatth Done.

Hardware encode works but not hardware decode.

Does hw decode work on a file which is not av1 encoded?
