Hardware Transcoding broken when burning subtitles ApolloLake-based Synology NASes

My NAS: QNAP TS-453Be. My installed package is version PlexMediaServer-1.18.4.2155-472413ec0-x86_64.qpkg. Installing version PlexMediaServer-1.18.3.2175-4593fabed-aarch64.qpkg is giving an error: Failed to install PlexMediaServer 1.18.3. Installation package is incompatible. Use the correct package.

@charliego

Download the 1.18.3 qpkg again. You accidentally misclicked and got yourself the ARMv8 version which is identified by the arch64 in the filename.

The one below is what I saw for Intels.

https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.18.3.2156-349e9837e/qnap/PlexMediaServer-1.18.3.2156-349e9837e-x86_64.qpkg

Thanks nibbles. I followed the link Corrupted video output stream with hardware transcoding and downloaded the file under ā€œQNAP - Intel 64-bitā€ which is giving the ā€œARMv8ā€ file. So must be a mistake in the link.

Same issue on a QNAP with an apollo lake chip running 1.18.3.2156. Anyone know what the last good version was on QNAP that actually worked? Seems like there’s two test builds in this thread that aren’t having good results. I’d rather just downgrade.

Links all 404.

This is because none of them worked . Here with Qnap 253-b and same problem.
Waiting for a fix ( almost 2 months) or a link for the last stable(working) version fo the PMS

For anyone else with this issue on a QNAP device, delete the latest build, then install the ā€œlatestā€ Plex build from the official QNAP store. It’s version 1.16.6.1592, doesn’t have the subtitles crash, doesn’t have the corrupted video issue, supports hardware encoding, and doesn’t suffer from the 100% CPU glitch that was in 1.17. Fantastically stable build. In fact, I’m not entirely sure what I’m missing out on (maybe later Quicksync drivers? Not like it matters as that isn’t even working in 1.18). The only downside is that your settings will get wiped, and if you do it remotely, you’ll need a way to activate the server on the same subnet. I used linux station and VNC over a VPN to do this. Pain in the ass, but it worked.

Going forward, I’m going to start archiving working builds once this (hopefully) gets fixed by Spring. QNAP bulids are pretty hit or miss, and having a safe, moderately up-to-date fallback looks to be needed in this day and age.

Same with synology ds918+. The only version without issues is the official version from the package center on the synology. It’s version 1.16 as well. Every version from 1.17 onwards has transcoding issues. Either no playback at all or the first 60-90 seconds is very pixelated.

While I get the frustration I don’t agree with cussing out the plex team. It’s clear they’re working on the issues but haven’t figured it out yet. I guess for now we should just stick with a working version. I do however think they should make it easier to access previous versions of the plex server. There’s a thread on here which details a way to get previous versions but it’s very tedious and bothersome…I don’t understand what the reasons could be that the archive of past versions is not available

Thanks for information @qnplexuser3 about your problems with the latest PMS 1.18 series. I stopped updating my server in October. I didn’t want to risk problems over the holidays.
I’m glad you were able to roll back to a stable version. You may want to search for the last stable 1.16 series that was released and upgrade to that at some point.

These are the last three in that series that I have still. I’m not sure which was stable and which was beta.

If you encounter problems, let us know.

Just to add my experience to this:

I encountered the garbled video issue when attempting to enable subtitles on some H.264 videos on my Synology DS218+. After reading through all the advice in this and some other threads, it looks like this particular issue is still being worked on by the Plex dev team.

I tried the following Plex package versions and they all exhibited the same issue:

  • 1.18.3.2156
  • 1.18.3.2175
  • 1.18.4.2171 (decided to keep this version)

For the time being I’ve resolved the problem by SSH’ing into the DS218+ and removing the iHD driver file at:

/volume1/@appstore/Plex Media Server/lib/dri/iHD_drv_video.so

This lets hardware transcoding still work, but resolves the garbled video issue.

Note that installing a new version of the Plex package will put this file back, so you’ll have to go in and delete it again afterwards.

Same Experience - DS918+. But because of the garbled video when removing the iHD driver i installed the PMS from Synologys Packagecenter. Version 16.5.1xxxx. This version is uneffected and works. i keep it untill this problem is resolved.

best regards.

I’ve read about the video quality issue some are experiencing after removing the iHD driver. Strangely, I haven’t seen it, but I need to do more testing. I’m not yet clear on the circumstances under which it occurs.

I just got my DS218+ last week so I’m new to Plex. Would rather not install Synology’s package because (as I understand it) it’s 32-bit and doesn’t do hardware transcoding. I need that feature as my DS is used for other things serving other users.

Does Plex offer historical downloads of their Synology 64-bit packages anywhere in case I needed to try downgrading to version 1.16.x but keep HW transcoding capability?

@ChiefOddball
The latest in the Packagecenter is 64 Bit. Otherwise there would be no hardware transcoding.

Good that it works for you. When i delete the iHD Driver i get a Pixxelmess the first 30-90 sec. With iHD Driver transcoding with subs doesnt work.

best regards

That’s my experience too

Sorry - disregard, just noticed they updated the links

Best you install the version from the syno repository for the time being.

I am still with 1.18.4.2082, but I will test the latest one soon. It seems you have either hardware transcoding with pixel mess or not hardware transcoded without mess.

You are correct. I deleted the post.

True true - They’re working on it and are interacting with us more than a lot of companies would!

We don’t seem to be experiencing these issues with v1.18.0.1944 on our DS918+. Should we hold off on upgrading?

For now I’d stay on 1.18.0.1944. It seems to be the last version that doesn’t have transcoding issues. I’m doing the same until I get confirmation that this has been fixed properly.
