Hardware Transcoding broken when burning subtitles ApolloLake-based Synology NASes

Likewise. 1.18.4.2155 works for me on my DS918+ as well.

The discussion from earlier in this thread about 2155 indicates that there are 30-90 seconds of blurry picture when transcoding h264. I assume this is why the change was reverted, but frankly seems better than the ā€œunfixedā€ version that’s in release now.

It would be nice for a plex employee to chime in here and give us a status update from an engineering perspective. Since the situation will guide expensive hardware purchase decisions, it would be nice to have fairly regular updates on the status and some estimate of timeline. It doesn’t seem impossible that a major bug involving an older platform that’s been acknowledged but not fixed for 3+ months might never be fixed; if there’s just no progress being made then please let us know.

not sure if is just me though, but i do not have any 30-90 seconds of blurry picture with h264, all works just fine with the 2155

that’s also why i’m following this closer, just to know when is safe to upgrade from 2155

It still doesn’t work, even on the latest fw beta 1.18.5.2260. Maybe I got into the thread because I don’t have a synology server, my QNAP TS-453Be, but it’s on the intel celeron J3455 processor. The problem occurs with embedded subtitles and conversions, it still looks the same on android app and chromecast and sync.

I wonder if this is just a simple config change. If so, I’ll just re-package the old QNAP version and keep on running something from the good ol’ days when Plex worked.

TheTVDB changed their API. Right now both old and new versions are accessible. They’re cutting off the old version on 31 Jan.

PMS 1.18.2 is the first release that supports the new API, hence the notice to update.

Can confirm the latest build on the site from Jan 17th doesn’t fix the issue on a QNAP TS-453be.

Tried it last night.

I’ve reverted to 1.18.0.1944, which works fine on a DS918+. I think I tried 1.18.4.2155 as well but then got the scrambled picture when starting playback. I’ll leave it like this until a new build fixes this permanently.

@ChuckPa @chrisallen It’s been over 2 weeks since any Plex employee has commented or provided an update on this very important issue. We really appreciated it when you were engaged before. Please don’t stop now.

On January 31, version of plex prior to 1.18.2 will no longer work because of the TVDB API change. The solution of ā€œusing an old verisonā€ will stop being a solution in exactly 8 days.

Can someone from Plex please provide a comment on the state of affairs now? Is any solution forthcoming? Are you still working on this?

@jamietre

Do you know when we have staff meetings or otherwise tapped in ?

I have a meeting within the hour. I will ask.

Hey guys! Apologies for the delay. I have updated the links in my post here

These now use the older i965 driver for Apollo Lake processors which fixes the corruption issue when burning subtitles, and also includes a driver patch to fix the poor quality that is experienced during the for 30-60 seconds of playback, It also fixes the color conversion issue that some users experience when HW transcoding 10-bit media.

Please install build 1.18.7.2306-9bdf93750 linked in the post here and let me know if it solves your issues.

Still no dice for me on 918+ when I enable transcoding it just displays a black screen for about a minute then sound resumes with a static picture. This happens with h264, h265 and even with mpeg2.

update:

Removing the iHD_drv_video.so file fixes everything now. Transcoding is fast to start and no longer does the 60-90 seconds of garbled video.

Thanks for getting this to finally work but the last step is to make plex use the i965 driver instead of trying to use the iHD driver as most users won’t know they need to ssh in and remove/rename the iHD driver.

@toyanucci can you please post the output of

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "model name" | head -1

It should look similar to model name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU J3455 @ 1.50GHz

I think this is fixed for me now on my DS918+. i dont get any of that weird smearing issues anymore.

i assume im meant to have both ā€œUse hardware acceleration when available and Use hardware-accelerated video encodingā€ enabled now? i only remember there being one option in earlier builds.

Version PlexMediaServer-1.18.7.2306-9bdf93750-x86_64.qpkg works well on the QNAP TS-453Be-8G. If transcoding is required, the first image appears after 10-15 seconds. Subtitles do well when transcoding. No distorted images. Tested with h264 and h265 on an LG TV and a tablet.

Assume that this version is preferred over 1.18.4.2155 which also worked well.

Do you also have a docker build for this version? I’m experiencing the same issues on my ASUSTOR Nimbustor 4 while running on Docker. Checked docker hub, but didn’t see an image tagged with this version number.

Great. Qnap TS-453Be with the application on Android Pie works

Thank you very much

I just upgraded from plexmediaserver-1.18.4.2155-472413ec0-x86_64.spk to PlexMediaServer-1.18.7.2306-9bdf93750-x86_64.spk and for me everything works just fine now.
Did not test what would happen if I came from the latest official build before upgrading…
Thank you!

4k hw transcoding with SRT subtitles enabled is still broken even with 1.18.7.

Any ideas on when that will be fixed?

I can confirm this worked for me.
