Hardware transcoding not available after OS update

hi all… saw this isdue over in the synology section relative to mfg supplied updates. apparently a dsm update breaks the hardware transcoding set up via plex pass. I’m posting here to ask if this or similar issue exists on the qnap side?

Not that I have ever heard of.

wow that is significant. q must have more experience with Linux?

It has nothing to do with experience.

I wrote the Plex installer for Synology.

On QNAP Plex runs as the admin (root) user as all apps do. It ignores all file permissions including those which prevent someone from accidentally deleting your media.

On Synology Plex runs as user plex. It is subject to all device and file system permission restrictions as any normal user. I made it that way to prevent accidental deletion. When Synology updates DSM, they erase the permissions definition file I install for user plex. I must therefore re-install the file. I could change the installer to run as the admin user but all sense of protection from accidental deletion would be gone.

Which would you rather?

OK that clears it up thank you. reinstalling the permissions definition file should be an easy part of the rebuild. for some reason I had mistakenly assumed that one had to reinstall pms

While this has been answered many times in the Synology forum, it doesn’t hurt to answer here for all to see.

  1. Uninstall PMS in Package Center (the Library / metadata is held safe and untouched )
  2. Reinstall PMS in Package Center
  3. Issue resolved

got it. guess my mistake was regarding the level of effort to reinstall. pardon my ignorance here as I’m still climbing the learning curve: the procedure above works even if you have downloaded pms from plex and not originally installed from the package center?

One of Synology’s updates… not sure which, picked up my new installer… Around 1.8.x. Since then, the installer is there.

Added features:

  1. You can select the destination volume at install time
  2. Should you move the Plex share. Uninstall/reinstall and automatically found + attaches itself to it
