No, it should be in the server settings, on the transcoding page. The problem here is discoverability. Put it on the settings page and people will know straight away. If it goes on a support page, they have to go looking for it, which they won’t.
Mark,
Are you suggesting:
- If the 32 bit version is installed and compatible hardware detected, Highlight it?
- If the 32 bit version is installed but NO compatible hardware detected, silently hide as it does now?
- If the 64 bit version is installed and PMS detects compatible hardware but not Plex Pass, disable but show “Plex Pass required” ?
- If the 64 bit version is installed but NO compatible hardware is detected, Show the box as permanently disabled?
I’m missing a use case here. Which one ?

Input! Need Input

Yep, Trumpy has it spot on. The message about the x64 version should also link directly to the x64 download page.
Good because that’s how I submitted it to engineering.
The messaging requested will be uniform across all Linux and Linux-based NAS platforms.
Hey there everyone.
Apologies in advance if this is the right place for this post (I’m new to the forums and read the rules and think this is ok to post here), but after reading this thread I went ahead and picked up a plex pass to try out the hardware transcoding feature with my synology DS916+.
After carefully following @ChuckPa’s instructions above I still don’t seem to be able to access the hardware transcoder with a test HVEC video file I have. Rather, it seems to be transcoding my file via software instead. Let me list the details:
NAS: Synolgoy 916+
DSM version: DSM 6.2-23739 Update 2
Plex Media Server Version (downloaded from plex to get 64 bit): PlexMediaServer-1.13.4.5271-200287a06-x86_64.spk.crdownload
Video I’m testing: HVEC/Bit depth 10/container mkv (screen shot below):
Steps I took:
- Signed up for plex pass
- Updated plex media server on nas to latest 64 bit version)
- Turned on “use hardware acceleration where available”
- Restarted NAS
- Logged out of media server and logged in again
- Attempted to play an HVEC video (above)
- Video started to play, so I went to “activity” in the plex app to see if it was using hardware or software for transcoding (as suggested in this plex article https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/)
Result: when hovering over the actively playing video( in the activity view within the plex app) there was no mention of “hw” so I assume it was using software transcoding which makes sense as the CPU was 99% utilised.
Has anyone had luck getting hardware transcoding running on the 916+ or is my setup wrong?
Happy to provide any further input/logs/photos if anyone is willing to investigate.
Cheers.
-Steve
I’m afraid that your integrated gpu doesn’t support hw transcoding for HEVC. Can you try playing a x264-file instead?
For clarification:
-
Only the Apollolake class processors (J3355 and J3455) in the DSx18+ series are able to decode HEVC in hardware. All other HW transcoding-capable Synology processors are capped at H.264
-
The hardware acceleration option does not exist in the 32 bit version.
I see, this makes sense.
After testing with an h264 video I can see the hardware transcode happening, I wouldn’t have figured that out without your help.
@ChuckPa and @Tommy_Hewitt thanks so much for your support - you guys rock!
Literally just coming here to tell ktfrank_ennetran.com what a jackass he is. Don’t be rude to people who are trying to help you fix a problem. Go see a therapist about your ridiculous anger and treatment of other people. You have a serious issue.
Came for the advise, stayed for the drama. What a ride! @ChuckPa best customer service. Great job!
ktfrank, you are very rude, the plex employee are doing their best to assist you. I am a user and read through the conversion. You should be happy at least they attempted to assist you. Keep in mind they try their best to provide the support for their product, be kind and respect people that try to help. Keep it cool.
Thank you all.
Now, if you’ll forgive me.
Since there is much better drama elsewhere to be found, I’m closing this thread due to lack of interest.
