Hardware transcoding stopped working on 1.40.5.8854 over Synology

Server Version#: 1.40.5.8854
Player Version#: 10.19.2.1191 (Plex for Android)

Synology DS423+
DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 5

After installing Plex server 1.40.5.8854, transcoding puts the CPU at 99% and the video keeps stopping and loading.

I have downgraded to Plex server 1.40.4.8679 and everything went normal, the transcoding puts the CPU at 20% (more or less) and the video is running smoothly.

I don’t know if you need logs.

Server Version#: 1.40.5.8854

Synology DS920+
DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 5

Same problem with the new Update 1.40.5.8854. Transcoded Video keeps stopping and loading and CPU at 99%.

Issue fixes immediately when turning off HDR Tonemapping in the Transcoder settings.

Downloaded Version 1.40.4.8679 from GitHub and everything is working as expected. Guess I will keep this Version on my NAS in case i need to downgrade again since i now know this version ist working.

Hold on 1.40.4.8679

We know there’s a problem.

May I have server DEBUG logs of the problem in 1.40.5 ?

We need to confirm what’s happening for @Smok3y97 and @rcbravo

Thinking I might have the same problem. I’ve noticed that playback of 1080p original quality is resulting in a lot of buffering/stuttering–but only on certain clients: Namely Vizio app and Android app. Playing the windows native app doesn’t result in the same problem and doesn’t appear to force CPU usage. Forcing transcode to next step down (20Mbps) spikes cpu usage (system 60% media server sub 20%) with associated drop in quality.

Thinking it’s a repeat of this?

Here are my logs: Plex Media Server Logs_2024-08-17_18-38-37.zip - Google Drive

Updated the Server to 1.40.5.
Tryed playing a 4K DoVi/HDR10 File. Selected in Windows App 1080p 12mbps and it keeps buffering. Turned off HDR Tone Mapping and played the same file again. HW transcoding works again.

Downgraded PMS to 1.40.4.8679 which works fine with HDR Tone Mapping

@Smok3y97

Would you please check your server logs you provided ?

All I see are the agent (com.plexapp) logs.
I don’t see any of the logs I need (Plex Media Server.*.log)

@ChuckPa

Hey, the logs are in the .zip. But i deleted everything and here are just the Plex Media Server Logs: Plex Media Server Logs_2024-08-17_18-38-37 (2).zip - Google Drive

@Smok3y97

Thank you. I got it this time.

Now for the bad news:

  1. No tonemapping on GLK right now. This is an Intel problem we’re trying to work around.
  2. We do not know if/when it will resolve because Intel doesn’t have interest and they just laid off 15,000 people
  3. We are upgrading the transcoder core in hopes of improving what Intel doesn’t want to / didn’t support.

All I can recommend, until we:

  1. Turn off tonemapping.
    -or-
  2. pre-convert HEVC → H.264 externally

@ChuckPa

No problem.

It seems like this issue is known for a while know and was already fixed in 1.40.4.8679 ( PM-1667) or a workaround was implemented. Maybe you should link a download for the latest working version. I got this server Version from some github repository since i wasnt sure if i deleted the offical download since the last PMS Update. I’m now keeping this Version on my NAS since i know this Version works even with Tone Mapping.
