HW Trancoding with Tone Mapping not working?

I am using the package version of PMS (installed directly via SPK from Plex website, not from package centre). According to this post, hardware transcoding with tone mapping works.

However, in my testing, any files with HDR make my Synology choke, its clearly using CPU and not the HW trancoding. To confirm any 1080p or SDR 4k files transcode fine using HW.

Any ideas how I can get this to work? Ideally I’d like to avoid using docker as I’ve already had one unsuccessful attempt, and would prefer to keep using the package version.

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7164
Player Web Version: Version 4.108.0
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

Hardware accelerated transcoding is broken on devices with Celeron CPUs.

For now, fall back to 1.32.1.6999.

A beta release with a fix is expected on 19 June unless there are complications (see this post).

To fall back to 6999, uninstall Plex Media Server. Use the “Uninstall Only” option (the first one).

Then install the SPK for 1.32.1.6999.

Which Synology do you have ?

Did you enable HW transcoding (if your NAS supports it) in Settings - Server - Transcoder - Show Advanced?

I have a DS920+, HW transcoding is enabled.

Please help me by grabbing a fresh set of logs which capture HW failure. (No subtitles please)

I’ll write it up and notify the Engineer.

This is a GeminiLake CPU. We just fixed the regression in the ApolloLake CPUs.

Is there a way I can directly send this to you?

Does this mean the release on the 19th June won’t fix it for my machine?

Unknown.

That’s what I hope your logs will tell me.

I know what we did for the ApolloLake.
depending on what I find, i might have an immediate workardound

To those following along:

  1. @imran0 has run a few tests.
  2. In those tests, the GeminiLake is HW transcoding and tonemapping to 8-bit
  3. The next step is to test using a simple plex/web browser (remove android from the loop)

I can confirm today that I noticed that Hardware Encoding isn’t working on Synology NAS DS1019+

Used to work flawlessly, I did download the version mentioned above but feel a little nervous uninstalling current version in case I lose all libraries etc…

I have Plex server installed via Synology, and manually update to newer versions.

Let me know if I can help with logs etc…

Cheers

PS. Noticed when trying to play a 4K file in our Tesla and it kept buffering. Usually this plays flawlessly. Runs via web browser…

@Simon_rb

On DSM 6, you can always safely uninstall without loss of server info

On DSM 7, the default (first) radio button, is “uninstall only” (it also keeps all your server info. This is the same behavior as DSM 6 and why it’s the default.

It will erase your server info ONLY when you click the ERASE radio button

Thanks for the reply… I am on DSM7 and all I have is “Stop” and “Uninstall”. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong place

Start with uninstall and keep going.

  1. Uninstall.
  2. Are You Sure?
  3. Uninstall Choices

Ah! Thank you… I’ll give that ago later :+1:

I’m very glad to see I’m not the only one thrown by that terrible interface

Ummm, Maybe you could read the FAQ? Just sayin’

As for the interface, perhaps sell the Syno and purchase something else ?

Maybe, however even with that saying Uninstall + Keep on DSM7 isn’t an option until you have the balls to hit Uninstall. Maybe the FAQ could be updated to state Hit Uninstall first, then the option to uninstall + keep is there. With the FAQ stating Uninstall + Keep is what you must do and that not being an option at the begging is confusing… and the reason for my post.

Hope this helps others.

PS. To be fair, I hadn’t checked the FAQ, if I did however, I’d still have posted as unsure… I’ve not had to unlstinall anything from DSM before.

The very first page you see is Package Center asking for confirmation if you wish to continue the process

I’ll make a specific FAQ about downgrading but given how DSM works and that Uninstalling PMS on DSM 4, 5, or 6 was never destructive, I made certain it wasn’t destructive on DSM 7 either without expressly requesting it on the first page AFTER package center turns uninstall control over to the package.
