Has scanning for Local Media/Credits Listing been fixed?

I am running an older version where the server is able to pick up on my 16 hard drives (local Media) and sucessfully populate Credits listings for actors spread across my entire Library, running on my PS5 or Roku.

How ever in a version of plex about 9 months ago, this was completly broken and when trying to load my libraries from the server, it would either fail or just load some of my local stores HDD’s but not all of them. Has this problem been addressed yet? I want to upgrade to the newest version of plex because this version I am running has terrible transcoding issues but i also don’t want to upgrade and then not be able to scan for my local media files.

Take a look at the FAQ section of that article.

I know how this works, but under where it says “Movies and Shows in Media Libraries” this has not been able to load all of my local Media Libraries, some times it would fail completly, I would have to back out of the page and other times it would only load like half of my local drives. I am just asking if this has ever been addressed. it has been an ongoing issue for a while.

It would usually not work on my PS5 or Roku and those are the two devices Im using. How ever it works perfectly on the old version Im using now.

Not exactly a server issue: Plex Web - #448 by pcalves

It has been tested that for this feature to work reliably, all involved servers need a well-kept database which reacts swiftly to queries by clients.
It can’t hurt to let your server databases rebuild and optimze by this .bat file: PlexDBRepair/Windows at master · ChuckPa/PlexDBRepair · GitHub

Jeesus, yeah thats seems exactly the problems I been having. So its a problem related with the new “Plex Discovery Module”.

This issue remains and has been an issue since plex introduced discovery credits. I experience this pretty much all the time when I access credits.

When drives are asleep it takes a few seconds for them to wake up and during this time I guess the plex clients have a timeout which kicks in thinking they are fully down and then it fails back to only showing Known for and not your local Films & Programmes in Media Libraries credits.

The display of all titles with a certain actor is the Discovery module.

What Dokuro said is 100% correct. This is the exact problem I have. So then this is a compatability problem with Hard drive Hibernation turned on with the new Plex Discovery, which causes this glitch to where Local Media files don’t appear.

So in that case, can I just disable hard drive HIbernation and it should work?

Just try it. But see the tip above the database optimization.

Correct and I’ve tested it but you would NEVER want to do that. It will reduce the lifespan of your drives and is not energy efficient.

Also - happens for large raid arrays when many drives need to wake up. Its a timeout problem on the plex side.

The opposite, actually.
The number of stop/start times is a main factor for determining the life span of a hard drive.

Is there even away to disable hibernation? I know you can download free software to do it. I have WD element drives. Those are the only ones that have this sleep mode. My other drives remain on all the time. Unfortantly though my WD elements have most of my local media data. There Book drives.

I see your point but if the drive(s) are only woke a few times a day its better than running them up 100% of the time. Also, its not very energy efficient from a home lab perspective.

Don’t think so on those USB element drives :frowning: I’ve a WD My Cloud EX4100 NAS and it can be disabled under settings …

… but I’ve chosen to not to disable it.

It depends on the type of drive. Regular, internal hard drives will follow the power plan settings of Windows.

External hard drives though sometimes only follow their own firmware programming which forces them to stop after a short amount of idle time. Hence why the latter are not a great choice for server duties.

Well now it all makes sence. I guess the old scan system didn’t have this problem. Although occasionally I still experience where my media files don’t load right away but a quick backout and then select again after the drives spins up, solves the problem. How ever the credits listings still work amazingly well on this old version.

How ever I have noticed that seeking back and foreth during video playback and closing files and re-opening them works effortlessly on a newer version, compared to the old one im running.

In general though: as long as you hold your plex data folder on an internal drive (preferably an NVMe drive), this should be no problem for the discovery issue.
Collecting all the titles where an actor has been involved with doesn’t require access to the actual video files of these titles.

Yeah thats an issue for me because I have like mayber 100+ libraries spread across like 38TB of data, it is impossible for me to install all of those internally. I have most of my externals connected to USB, using multiple different controllers.
