There are solutions for this kind of task.
Filebot for instance.
Yeah I dabled around with those kinds of programs. My library is hard to configure that way though because I have some them have very different file structures for foreign movies and tv shows, then american movies. I have kept up pretty well with manually fixing everything, i just donât want to end up with alot of âunmatchesâ entries after I upgrade, or esspecially after I transfer my entire database to a different Computer with a new NVMe drive.
Is prevented best by sticking to the recomemnded naming schema.
If you have particularly hard to match items (i.e. because they are ambiguously titled or there were several titles by the same name in a year), then use the database ID matching hints in the folder names.
Plus the side note I mentioned above about multiple pairs of square brackets.
Can be prevented with a bit of preparation and a backup. See my post from earlier today: PSA: Script to back up and restore Plex app data on a Windows system - #30 by OttoKerner
The way I do it, is i usually go to my Plex APP DIR. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server. Then I just copy the entire folders of âMetadataâ, âPlug-in Supportâ, and âMediaâ and just copy them to an external. Then over write with the new directory once plex is installed on the new drive.
My main point was not the method for backing up, but the last paragraph.
Hello, sorry its taking me so long to get back but this was alot of work and I had to rebuilt my new PC. Now I am trying to have my PMS be discovered by both computerâs so i can access all my libraries split across both machines. How ever when I login under one specific PC, it only allows me to pick up the signal of that device. I Have since transfered my entire database to the new pc. Do I need to keep the old data files from the old PC in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ archive or should I remove it all now?
I want to be able to set the PMS on my new more powerful computer to be able to discover my libraries from my HDDâs on my old PC and my new PC at the same time so I can run them on my PS5 and or Roku devices. There has to be a way to add two desktopâs to one server account, i mean it is a server after all. Under authorized devices, i do see both desktops appear in the server but when i sign out and login into PMS on my old computer, all the files in my new pc are not identified. Just errors.
Why are you signing out?
Login is into your Plex user account, not into a particular machine.
If you have more than one server, they are supposed to be all connected to the same Plex user account.
That way you can access both at the same time from all your Plex clients. You can even pin their libraries to the side bar at the same time, so you could e.g. have movies on server 1 and music on server 2.
I just donât understand how to accomplish this, can you please provide a tutorial. Lets say PC #1 is my new computer running plex app data from my M2 drive and PC #2 is my old system, but it still has hard drives that are attached to it that I need to be able to access.
So I have both PC 1 and PC 2 logged into the same server account running PMS. How ever when I go to my devices, they are only able to locate one desktop. I use the PS5 as an example. I login into my account under âMedia server Statusâ, it displays my server name - DESKTOP - ##### (number) So only the files on my media server that are used on PC1 can be accessed but the files that are on PC 2 not accessed because that desktop name isnât display under âMedia server statusâ with that device.
The only way i can switch it, is I have to logout of PC1, remove the authorized device from the PMS in this case the PS5. Then login to my other computer, set up a plex link to activate the PS5 again but this time it will discover my old system.
If I go into my plex media server, it only displays the one Desktop server to my account for my newer PC currently which is connected, how do I add both so my devices will recognize both Computer names across the same account.
By claiming both servers into the same plex.tv user account.
i.e. use the exact same login method and username and password on both devices.
If done correctly, (and both servers are actually reachable over the network) they should both appear in the sidebar after you switch it into the MORE⊠mode.

A different approach would be to create a network file share on one computer, then point Plex server on the other computer to that file share as a media file location.
This requires some knowledge about file sharing in the local network.
I donât get it, i did what you said, but when I login under PC2 its only displaying the desktop Name for PC2. Over here on PC1 (my newer machine), i do a refresh of my account and sure enough, its now set to PC2. So PC1 just got disabled after logging in under PC2.
How do you claim both servers into the same account?
I already told you above.
Well its not working. How about I sign out on both PCâs start fresh and then login under both?
Windows isnât activated yet on my new machine, would that have anything to do with it?
There is no need for that.
Settings - Server - General has the button for removing a server from its account.
Use it on both servers, then restart both and claim them into the same user account.
A thought: Have you created the second server by copying all the plex data folder and the registry data from old to new server?
If you did that, both machines share the same identity, which must be avoided.
Another thought: Make absolutely sure that both machines DONâT use the same local IP address.
No.
I following this tutorial
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/
How ever yes I do have the %LOCALAPPDATA% on both PCâs. Should I remove the entire directory here on the old pc? Because it has been fully transfered to my new computer including the uploading the Registry.
If i remove a server, though wouldnât that completly delete my entire profile. I did that before by mistake and I regretted it because I had to recreate all 108 of my libraries again.
Then it is indeed as I have told you: both servers share the same identity.
Unless you want to permanently disable the original server, this must never happen.
You need to give one of them its own identity.
Do it like this: Moving/Cloning Metadata - #4 by OttoKerner
There is no need to touch the plex data folder on either machine.
When speaking of the âCloneâ your reffering to the Destination PC right? The system that now has been copyied and transfer from the old machine.
remove these?
Windows
- Quit/exit your Plex Media Server, so itâs not actively running
- Open the appropriate Registry area (as noted above) to edit
- Highlight the following entries and delete them:
PlexOnlineHomePlexOnlineMailPlexOnlineTokenPlexOnlineUsername
and these as well.
- AnonymousMachineIdentifier
- MachineIdentifier
- ProcessedMachineIdentifier
Where is the key the âFriendlyServerNameâ entry, i canât seem to find it in the registry.
