HATE the new PS4 UI

Subject pretty much says it all. Been using Plex for years and the new UI is abysmal.

How can I revert back? Don’t make me regret my lifetime pass.

Did you figure it out? I also dislike the new interface and am looking to do the same.

At first I thought it was just a case of “things changed and they aren’t where I remember them”, but it does genuinely seem to be a change for the worse. The “big screen UI” is much less intuitive and emphasizes features that I rarely, if ever, use. This is obviously just a personal gripe, maybe there are others out there who prefer it. The release notes say enhanced for Playstation 4 Pro, which may have been the focus on those 4K streams. Wish there was an option to rollback from the v2 app for my own viewing purposes.

Agree! This new U/I is MUCH less intuitive. Can we please get an option to rollback?

Not only is it less intuitive (to an incredible degree), but it is also MUCH MUCH slower. And, incredibly; less stable. The old PS4 plex app was the most unstable app I’ve used in the last 15 years, and somehow this new one is somehow worse.

How is this possible?

Yep, hate the new UI. apparently its more in line with the other platforms, which, admitedly, i’ve not used, but if this is how they are… yeah… bad. my biggest gripe is probably how the start button no longer just starts playing whatever is unwatched in the currently selected category. I love just picking a show that i’m working my way through and hitting start to continue where i left off. now its as bad as netflix. For great homogenisation i guess… sigh.

I agree. The normal call to action buttons are smaller and harder to see. The movie preview has huge images of the cast, I can only presume the majority of people click those and data was gathered to drive the changes… I certainly never use that. etc etc

The new UI is awful. I use PLEX solely due to the UI. If this is the future I’m out.

I hate the new UI too. Even if they fix the issues with performance and loading thumbnails/movie titles (which honestly it shouldn’t have been released in its current state), the UX and the design are both still much worse than the old theme.

A week later and it’s not growing on me at all.

Why is a third of my screen devoted to actor headshots? So unnecessary.

Why does it take so many more clicks to do something?

Why is the UI horizontal? It’s 2018. Who does that?

And more troubling, why are all my streams suddenly buffering? On a completely wired network, which has worked flawlessly for years? Nothing has changed on my side, except Plex “updates”.

I actually really like it. I like the options for dealing with my large library sorted into collections and what not. I also have multiple sections on top of the movie/tv standards and it’s nice to be able to set defaults and hide the porn. I like that it lists the actors, it makes it easier to what other content I may have with them in it. I only wish they would add a “DIRECTOR” field as I would use that one more.

I have had it crash periodically, but not any more or less that the old UI. I choose the “REPORT” option when that happens and guess that it well get fixed.

Oh you sweet summer child…

Totally agree with you, it’s awful, and this is my initial reasons why:

  1. I hate the grey, would prefer a black background which would also save power on certain TVs.
  2. Icons at top left look ugly, TV icon has “programmes” scrolling, bad UI design.
  3. When selecting top icons, there is about a 2 to 3 seconds delay before anything appears below
  4. Poor use of space, e.g. select programmes, and all you can see on screen is “on deck” options, make things smaller or higher resolution, lots and lots of grey space everywhere.
  5. Why does each section have the plex server name associated with it which you have to scroll through to get to the content below it, just awful.
  6. Live TV EPG has no grid guide. So if you want to just turn on a channel by its name e.g. BBC 1 it’s not possible as it just shows what is currently playing, no reference to channel name.
  7. Watching Live TV is just broken, some channels seem to play ok, but the likes of BBC News HD - is just stutter stutter stutter - No issue my end, everything wired and I have a powerful plex server
  8. Live TV through PS4 is using GPU transcoding, however on my 8 core CPU it is still using 50% CPU to transcode just the audio!
  9. Live TV takes too long to appear on screen, initial buffering too long.
  10. Live TV - when clicking to watch a show you have to go through an additional hop which shows some episode information before you then have to click play again to watch the programme. Plex need to look at the SKY TV UI to see how it should be done.

Same, can’t sand the new UBER BRIGHT UI.

I’ve uninstalled Plex on PS4 and bought a Nvidia Shield instead, which has much better Plex integration.

Sorry for you guys… This subject makes me laugh because this happened more than a year ago on XBO. Thousands of users (and so, customers) screamed about that and the only response from staff was something more or less like “New unified UI. Take it or stop using it.”

There were even a thread summing up dislikes and voices acting like a petition, with no success. I guess everyone has just started to get use to throw up on that UI. At least, the UI on XBO is now globally functional thanks to Moussa who really took care of the so many issues.

Good luck. Keep us posted if you manage anything.

I agree. There is only 1 thing I like in the new update: The fast forward & rewind controls are better. Things I hate:
1/ It now doesn’t remember my selections for what movies to display eg. I always have it on "unwatched & sorted by date released. Now it keeps defaulting back to all movies & alphabetically & l have to keep changing it every time I watch a movie which takes a lot of clicks & is annoying every time doing this. Is this a bug?
2/ It now doesn’t show the year or the length of the movie under the thumbnails like it did before. This was really handy to be able to at least see the length so you can choose an appropriate movie for the time you have to watch it. Now I have to go into each one to look at this info which wouldn’t be so bad if it was fast which it isn’t.
3/ It takes a lot more clicks to get to where you want to go. The new interface is just awful.
4/ (minor) It doesn’t look good aesthetically to have the thumbnails jammed up against the edges of the screen. Leaving a bit of space looks much better. When did you last see a sign/book/brochure/website where it had foreground images right on the edge?
It wouldn’t be so bad if they fixed these issues but I would much prefer the way it was before.

No improvements for a long time now. Time to drop my Plex pass. I refuse to support development that insist on boneheaded direction; change for changes sake it seems. OSMC/Kodi for me I guess. Bye Plex, it’s been stupid and frustrating.

Did you try Emby?
