My plex server is running on a windows 7 pc and Live TV& DVR has been working fine for more than a year. I just noticed that I can’t connect to any channels suddenly and get the error:“Playback error can’t tune channel”.
I’ve tried on the browser of the machine with the server which used to work fine, my win 10 desktop which also used to work fine and my android phone will play movies but says there is no connection when I try live TV.
I can play moves, podcasts, etc but nothing on live TV.
It plays fine on the desktop using the WinTV app and signal strength shows really strong. It’s also an outside antenna.
I initially noticed the problem when the Hauppage Quad tuner card was installed in the PC so I deleted the tuners and re-installed them and signal strength shows great on most every channel and the guide works fine. I get an error when trying to play it.
I have not changed anything for months and since it is repeat season on TV I haven’t even tried to watch anything so I don’t know how long this has been going on.
Today I changed the transcoding from a separate ssd drive back to the C: drive in case it wasn’t liking that drive but that didn’t change anything.
There is plenty of hard drive space on every drive.
I then removed the quad tuner card and went back to the usb dual Hauppage tuner which used to work fine and reinstalled that. Again, guide works but the same error but it plays just fine in the WinTV v8.5 program
I even didn’t trust the “version is up to date” message so I manually downloaded the current version and reinstalled Plex server and that didn’t change anything (including the current version which had been there)
I will try any suggestions because when certain shows start and my wife can’t watch thm I will have a major problem!
This is now SOLVED and the following explains it in case someone else encounters this.
I posted this problem on Reddit r/Plex and someone had me do a bunch of troubleshooting which I had done most of already.
When I was swapping the tuners it evidently found the old settings and re-scanning only didn’t do it. I had removed the Quad tuner and tried the dual with the same results, nothing working.
When I reinstalled the Quad I deleted the tuners completely then did a re-scan so it wouldn’t try to reuse any old setting and Boom! it works again!
I was getting blind to the simple tasks and both deleting AND a new re-scan solved it if someone else encounters this.
The “fix” on the hauppage tuners was to delete the tuners then re-scan the channels as you set it back up. Evidently something glitched in the configuration files for the channels or something wasn’t compatible with a plex upgrade and the delete & re-scan fixed it. Anyway, all is good now.
Thanks
I tried this and when I go to scan channels all I get is the flashing clock that says 12:00. Did you delete them through plex or a different way? Thank you for your help.
I did the remove tuner in Plex then did a restart then I added back 1 tuner at a time (The Hauppauge quad tuner shows up as 2 dual tuners) then a re-scan then another restart. Checked it and was “fixed” so I repeated the steps again for the 2nd tuner. I think the restart between steps helped and the re-scan after re-adding the tuner. A re-scan without removing the tuners does not fix it.
Just tried it and when plex goes to look for my haupauge tuners it just spins. i’m about to give on plex being my recorder and just use WINtv its more reliable.
The only thing I can suggest now is to physically turn off the machine, remove the tuners from the machine, restart without the tuners and make sure Plex doesn’t show any hardware still. If so, remove it again. Make sure that nothing is showing in the WinTV app also. It almost sounds like some setting got corrupted in Plex so make sure you are on the latest version or just have it do a reinstall on top of what you have.
Then when all is checked, power off, reinsert tuners then restart. Scan for tuner then when found the do a channel re-scan before you do anything else. If it’s not finding the tuner after that it sounds like there might be a problem with the hardware itself. Win TV is working fine?
It sounds like we had identical problems. Try the steps up a earlier in all of the posts back where I started it out with “solved” and you will see what I did. This worked for me. WinTV worked during the other problems which told me it wasn’t hardware. It needs to be done in that specific order, at least it dis for me.
Something else just hit me, or I should say, just affected me as I’m moving my plex server between computers today from a windows 7 machine to a windows 10 machine. You need to go to hauppage.com and click on the windows 10 drivers tab then select your tuner or it’ll never find it in plex. I literally just ran into that and remembered it. Update drivers then restart then it should find your tuner
I may have figured it out. I deleted the DVR, cleared the cache files, optimized the database, cleaned bundles and then when I readded the DVR I was able to scan the channels. I also uninstalled wintv just in case. The guide is loading now, so the real test will be to see if something records. Thank you for all your help.
