OK, I believe that I read the relevant online support and forum discussions on this and I need SUPPORT from PLEX. As of yesterday I am a monthly pass member and have installed Plex server on my home computer. Given that I pay for the Plex subscription, I am disappointed that I can’t get direct support and need to post via forum. (I digress).
I am running Win 10 with a Hauppauge WinTV-QuadHD PCI TV tuner card. The OTA works well with WinTV v8 software so I know the card and the antenna works. I uninstalled the WinTV v8 software as recommended and only installed a driver for my card that I received directly from Hauppauge. When I click set up ‘Plex DVR’ it either doesn’t recognize the card, just spins and sometimes states “! there was a problem discovering devices” In the rare case when a device does show up and I can select one, the scan for channels doesn’t work. Very disappointing as I specifically selected this card because it is suppose to work with Plex.
We are not off to a good start as a new customer with Plex. Please provide me with technical assistance to get this up and running.
Try putting an exception in your antivirus software for plex. I’m no expert, but I read that somewhere before I got mine to work, and I was able to figure out how to do it. It worked. At least at first…
I have Windows Home Server 2011 with the WinTV Quad Tuner. When installing and setting my Quad Tuner up with Plex, it displays as two - two tuners for a total of 4. One of those two tuners showed an issue where Plex stated it was not available. Based on info I have read on other posts in this column…I set an exception in Windows Defender to allow (ignore) the entire Plex folder. For my Plex installation it is D:\Plex. That resolved the issue in Plex and now it sees both 2 tuners so I have a total of 4 tuners available, Thanks for the good tip.
I just got the Hauppauge QuadHD and was trying to set it up on a brand new Win10 PC w/ a new PMC (first time setting one up). I had not trouble adding the card - PMC ID’d the 2 tuners and I was able to add them to the PVR and scan for available channels. I live just outside of NYC, and it found ~40 on each tuner, though per AntennaWeb, the closest transmitter is 7 miles from me (the local ABC affiliate) and I can’t seem to pick up those channels with the Mohu Leaf I’m using (w/ amp). I have another Leaf in the bedroom, probably 6-8ft directly above this one, and the TV in that room picks up all the major networks, incl. ABC.
The PC is Win 10 w/ a i5-8500 w/ UHD 630. Latest drivers from Hauppauge’s web site, and I see 2 tuners in Device Manager that appear to be working properly. I was able to add a Music folder from a NAS, and PMS Indexed that and I can play it on the clients without issue. Likewise, streaming an MP4 file stored local on the PMS server seems to be OK.
But, I can’t watch anything. If I go to the guide on the tuner or a local client (PC or XBox 1), I just get a blank screen when I try to watch Live TV, though occasionally I will get the ‘Tuner not available.’ message. In the Activity indicator, it does show as ‘Recording’. No errors in the log. If I actually set a recording, PMS creates a file and it grows, and if I click ‘Watch Now’, I am given the options to ‘watch’ it from the start or ‘Live’, but it’s just a black screen either way.
If anyone can think of anything I’m missing or has any other current info on this issue, please post. Thanks!
I tried Plex on my Android Phone, and that does seem to be working for live tv. I also tried Chrome (was using Edge on the PMS Server) on a PC on the LAN, and that IS also working. XBox One (on wired LAN) is not working. So, looks like the initial issues I was seeing were more with the Edge browser (which may also explain the Xbox client, if it’s Edge-based tech?). I’m just hoping it works with w/ a Roku, which is my ultimate goal…
Will do some further testing with the channel scanning and recording tomorrow.
Yeah, I got it working… sort of. I think at one point I just deleted the entire DVR and did the whole set up again, and it seems to be OK as far as watching from my various clients.
Many of the problems I’m having now are just tuning issues. I added a HD Homerun Extender in the bedroom hoping to use it to pick up the couple of channels I wasn’t getting downstairs. I’m able to catch a couple of them, but there are still 2-3 high VHF channels that I can’t seem to catch at all (WPIX in NYC, which is CW, is the main one). I’ve tried a bunch of different indoor antennas, and I’m at the point where I may get the EZ HD from Denny’s Antenna and try to mount it in the attic along w/ the HDHR, but then I have to add an electrical outlet, and then either figure out if the WiFi will be good enough in the attic, or maybe get an powerline ethernet adapter and see if that works.
When I can get signal to each tuner, I can record 6 channels at once, with the PC’s CPU bouncing between ~40-100% utilization and only ~4GB RAM being used.
