Plex no longer sees my Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner, "Add Device" scans forever

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9
Player Version#: 4.42.1
Tuner Make/Model: Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD
Guide/Lineup name:
Using XMLTV?:
Channel number/Name:

I have had everything working fine for a year or so, but today I noticed that it had not recorded anything since I ran the latest Win10 update this morning. The failed entries in the DVR Schedule say “Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna.”, and if I try to tune into a station it says “Playback Error - Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna.”

Using the WinTV app that came with my Hauppauge tuner has no problems. I went into the Plex settings and it shows the two listings for my WinTV-quadHD that it normally does, but it has a notice for each saying “Device not found. Ensure your device is powered on and connected to your network.” I have rebooted but it does not help. I removed one of the entries so I could use the “Add Device”, but that just scans forever with “Looking for compatible devices…”, and has a message for “Don’t see your HDHomeRun Device? Enter its network address manually”, but I do not have an HDHomeRun Device.

I have a LOT of recordings in my DVR Schedule, so I really do not want to try deleting Plex and starting a fresh install. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

The server is on a computer running
Windows 10 Pro (Preview Edition)
Version 20H2
OS Build 19042.508

I am having the exact same problem with my Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner via Plex, Plex can’t seem to find the antenna. The Plex TV guide loads fine, but when it comes to starting up the channel, I get the “cannot find antenna” error.

When I remote to my windows media server and use the Hauppauge software that came with the TV tuner, Hauppauge sees the antenna and plays live tv on the Hauppauge app just fine.

It seems that simply rolling back to a previous version of Plex resolves an awful lot of update issues, but we should still bring the issues up so Plex can resolve them. In the meantime, I was able to roll back using these instructions and everything is working fine for me again:

I rolled back to 1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896 and saved the install file to my Downloads folder for safe keeping. I think I will skip 1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9 .

Rolling back to 1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896 worked for me as well. Hopefully they fix this issue in the next update.

Not just me then. Top work Plex.

I will add my count as well. Both of my WinTV-HVR2250’s are no longer found by the system. Plex act as if nothing has been setup up before, asking to configure Live TV & DVR.

If you follow the steps in the “How do I roll back the version of Plex?” link I posted above, you should be able to revert to a prior version of Plex and have all of your settings, stations, recordings, schedule, etc intact. You can also click on “Skip this version” for the update to 1.20.1.3252 so you won’t get a notice about an available update until the next one is ready.

Hopefully Plex will take notice of how many are reporting this issue and look into it so it doesn’t happen again.

I had a similar issue with my WinHD-quadHD. wasn’t working correctly in Plex but had no issues with WinTV 10 app.
I fixed it by uninstalling the Drivers for the card. Once removed scanning for new hardware did not detect the card. The drivers for the card are built into the WinTV 10 install.
I did not want to reinstall the app so did a search for just the drivers to install and found them.

After reinstalling the driver you need to restart the system before it will show up in Device Manager.

After rebooting the issue was resolved and the card was working correctly again.

Just wanted to throw my hat in this ring as well. Just noticed Live TV was no longer working. The Guide was was operational but any watching or recording would simply fail. The message that kept showing in the Plex UI was “Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna.”

I am running a Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner, Win2k19. I took this opportunity to uninstall the WinTV 10 software from my server as it was redundant to the Plex DVR. If you go this route make sure you download and install just the Hauppauge drivers which @glens007 posted (thanks glens007).

I rolled the PWS to the previous version and we’re back up and running with Live TV! Definitely recommend skipping the latest Plex update (v.1.20.1.3252) Thanks to @JimWise74 for the help as well. Saved me a bunch of troubleshooting time.

I have the tuner not found every time I do a version update. Happened for the last several updates. I found that I have to stop the server, open the sqllite database table media_providers_resources and find the row that shows my wintv tuner and delete that row. Then write the table close the database .
Then restart plex, then add the tuner back in.
A real pain in the butt. I would think plex would fix this in an update, but not yet.
I found the fix just using Google

I’m having this issue as well with a WinTV-dualHD tuner. I tried switching the the latest beta, but no luck.

Is there any way to confirm Plex is aware of these issues and actually working to resolve them? Haven’t a few updates come out since the original problem report?

Hi Everyone.

I see a lot of activity, and research has been done by many (thanks to everyone), so rather than replicate the work, am simply going to ask whether anyone has had any success with their LiveTV yet?

I’m using Windows 10, Hauppauge Dual HD tuner, and although Plex (1.20.1.3252) sees the tuner, over the several weeks that I’ve been trying, have seen a variety of symptoms including:

  • clicking scan channel resulting in “12:00 awaiting channel scan”, or nothing, or something similar resulting in no scan, or incomplete scan
  • using the channels I can get in the default list, and trying to view via the UI it reports “Playback error. Could not tune channel…”
FYI: I am using this (https://www.xmltv.net/) for my guide source, as I’m in Australia.

In contrast, just installed MediaPortal, and Live TV works pretty much immediately, on that…

So am very sure this is a Plex-specific issue, and not to do with my system, etc…

Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Greg

Plex- any chance of a response here please?

Your 1.20 release appears to have killed Hauppage tuners and from what I can gather it is not resolved in this latest release. As this appears to be the way you want issues to be fed back, we’d I’m sure be grateful for an acknowledgement that you are aware of the issue and what you are doing to fix it.

Believe it or not, a new version just came through: 1.20.2.3402

Deleted my DVR (wasn’t working previously), and re-scanned, and everything is working…

Holding my breath, but all looks great!

Thanks PLexDevs!

I just upgraded to the new 1.20.2.3402 as well, but once again Plex is not working properly with my Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner. When I try to watch Live TV it looks like it is buffering for a bit, but then it goes right back to the guide. When I tried with the previous update it popped up an error saying "“Playback Error - Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna.”, but with this update it just errors out silently with no message.

I rebooted my system and ended up getting the same error message pop-up that I did with the previous version now. I went through the Support FAQs for Plex, found one for Live TV/DVR, at the end of the article clicked the button saying it was not helpful, and in the response box I gave a rough overview of the issue and told them they need to check out this thread and that no one from Plex had responded to it yet. Will see if we hear from anyone about this.

Hi @JimWise74,
Would you be able to compress your Plex Media Server logs and post there here please?

Also, can you confirm the model number of your Hauppauge tuner.
I’m assuming, from the Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD description you posted earlier, that the card may be this one: https://hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_quadhd.html

Thanks!

Correct, the full make/model info for the tuner is:
HAUPPAUGE WinTV-quadHD PCI Express TV Tuner Card 1609

and is the same one that you link to. My server logs should be attached. I am more than happy to poke around to do any other tests or follow other steps to help narrow down what is causing the issues for several of us.
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-10-07_18-45-48.zip (3.7 MB)

Just adding to my previous post, but 24 hours later, my Live TV is still working, on my Win10/HAUPPAUGE WinTV-DualHD USB tuner, and I’m able to stream to my tablet.
(I have not thoroughly tested - but so far it looks good…)

JimWise74: Sorry to hear you are still having issues… All the best with your debugging.

Jesus. What a mess. First the EPG is broken and now the tuner. Thank you all for your tips. I’m reverting to a previous version of Plex.
