Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q support?

Greetings.

I am the owner of a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q. I recently saw that Plex DVR support was added to the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-955Q. I’d like to ask if there are any plans to add Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q support as well, or if there are any work-arounds/dirty-hacks to get it working with Plex.

Considering that I can’t even seem to find a single difference between the two (other than the name) on their product pages at Hauppauge’s website, I’m sure you can understand why I would want support for my TV tuner.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read all this.

Hello ajshell1,

I guess that when you try to set your DVR you only have the message “searching for device in you network…” ?

I also have one WinTV-HVR-950Q, and as It’s not an 955Q I can’t make Plex server to support/discover the device. I did also searched and like you, can’t find any major difference other than the 955Q (as reported) seem to be better in reception of digital signal. But product is SO alike.

I took the Plex Pass to get access to the DVR portion, because I was at first on the impression that I had a 955Q until I had a look the product closely!

To the Plex team, I know that you will support more devices, and I hope that the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q will be in the next release of the supported devices so I will renew my plex pass subscription!

Thank you all. And I’m open to any work-arounds until then!

+1 for 950Q support. I’d like to finally put this thing to use.

Would love this as well!

+1 more here too, even the drivers the same.

Have any of you tried uninstalling WinTV, then just installing just the drivers yet? That’s what I’m doing next. I haven’t tried changing the name of it in the reg file yet either, I’m still a bit purrplexed

EDIT: Negative on the reg file edit on wards to a complete uninstall using HCW Clear, then a reinstall with just the drivers, WinTV8 and plex don’t get along anyways

EDIT2: Negative on the just the drivers install too

+1 thought the latest server update might have addressed it but doesnt look like it

I have analog cable (no digital box) and i want to watch/record walking dead (AMC) in plex. I bought the hdhomerun connect, but it turns out that only works with digital channels (AMC is just analog on my coax). So i ordered wintv8 to get my hauppauge 950 working - only to find out that’s not supported. I hope it becomes supported soon!

+1 for support for the WinTV-HVR-950Q. I’m hoping that an update comes out soon.

Just curious if there is a technical reason for why it shouldn’t work? As stated above the drivers are the same for 955Q.

Note:

I haven’t actually TRIED to get my 950Q working with Plex yet. It’s currently hooked up to my desktop, where I use it’s composite input to digitize VHS tapes and capture video output from my original Xbox (thanks to Game Mode, games are actually playable in this setup).

My desktop and my Plex server are both in the basement of my house, so I can’t capture any TV signals with the antenna that the 950Q came with. If the 950Q was supported, I might consider moving my server upstairs to get a better signal. However, if the 950Q isn’t and never will be supported, I don’t want to go through all the trouble of moving it.

Also, my 950Q was owned by grandfather before he passed away a few years ago. So I’d like to keep using it as a way to honor his legacy (or more likely because I’m a cheapskate who doesn’t want to pay money for a new tuner).

So, the big question, does the HVR 950Q works with PLEX DVR or not? Thanks.

+1 for 950Q support. I’m considering purchasing a WinTV-QuadHD but would rather save money and use the device I already have. Any plans to support the 950Q?

+1 for 950q support

According to this page the 950 DOES work but I tried it on two separate system but no luck at all. I heard ever the 955 has issues even though it’s “officially” supported by Plex. I’ve read the WinTV Dual plays nicely. Thanks.

I have not been able to get the 950 to work either. Just read through the instructions and and it does mention that you might have to uninstall WINTV8. Did anyone try it after uninstalling WINTV8

that actually states the 955, NOT the 950…

that said, any update from the Plex crew on this one?

+1 on 950Q support

The 950Q does work. I am one of the two listed testers, my feedback on the page is the feedback I submitted.
Plug in your 950Q, install the driver from Windows Update, and then REBOOT. If you do not, it will not work right.
The 950Q works just fine.

@kiiskidr I got the driver from MS as well as Hauppauge (from v8 bundle) and neither works. Did you install any software from Hauppauge?

Another +1 on official 950Q support, please!

@kiiskidr I uninstalled my old drivers, restarted, plugged in my 950Q, did Windows Update to install the drivers and rebooted. It still doesn’t find the 950Q on my computer…maybe something I missed?

Was anyone successful in getting it to work?
