Setting up Plex and WinTV-HVR-950Q

Hello,

I apologize in advance if this has already been addressed in another post, but I have not found it yet. I have a Plex server running on Linux. I also have a premium Plex Pass. In that server I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-955Q tuner. I have the tuner working under Kaffeine and Me-TV. I am trying to set up the Live TV and DVR service but am unable to locate the tuner. It sits there spinning at the DVR setup screen trying to locate the device but never finds it. What am I possibly missing here to get this to work?

UPDATE - I looked closer at the tuner and discovered that it is in fact a 950Q instead of a 955Q like I thought it was. Is there any chance this tuner will be supported in Plex?

Have you looked in the Community Supported Tuner thread? Pinned to the top of the DVR & Live TV forum.

I’m having the same problem you are having. I’m running windows 10 anniversary, on a dell quad core machine with latest plex 1.9.6.4401 and I’m a plexpass lifetime member. I loaded the latest 955Q USB drivers on the plex server but not the Hauppauge software. Apparently, from what I read it can cause problems. Attached is a screenshot of the tuner drivers in device manager and also a screenshot of what happens when I start the process of setting up the DVD under SETTINGS / LIVE TV & DVR / SET UP PLEX DVR. It just says “looking for compatible devices” and I even let it run overnight with no change. When I try to set it up manually by IP it fails (I used the IP of the local server seeing as how it’s a USB device) but this fails as well.Thank you.

D’oh! It looks like I made the same mistake you did with the model numbers. I think this explains it. Bummer. Luckily I didn’t pay a lot for it. If you make progress with this please update. Thanks.

UPDATE. I looked at the list that JohnM_… posted and the 950 is listed under “Tuners that should work” so it seems like this may be a technical issue, not a compatability issues. Should a case be opened up for this for Plex Developers to look at? I’m not sure how it work. myxlflik, any progress? Thanks all…

The 950Q is definitely not working in Plex under my Linux Mint distribution, but it does work in Linux itself via the Me-TV and Kaffeine applications. Fortunately, I bought two tuners at the same vendor on Ebay and the other one is in fact a 955Q like they both were supposed to be and the 955Q was detected almost immediately. Does anyone have some tweaks that might make the 950Q work? Could it be tricked into thinking it’s a 955Q by some udev rules? My understanding is that the 950Q and 955Q are essentially the same tuners with the 955Q being the new version of it. I could be mistaken there though.

Another update. The 950 is not on the official list of compatible tuners but the community is reporting that it does work fine. Here is the official list https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/225877427-Supported-DVR-Tuners-and-Antennas

From what researched the two models 950 and 955 are virtually identical but the 955 is supposed to have improved digital TV reception.

JohnM, I looked over the list as well. It looks like that only addresses the windows side. Since my Plex servers are on Linux, it would not apply to me in this case. I am hoping there is a way under linux to make this tuner work. I didn’t spend much for it either but would be nice to have it working.

myxlflik. I bought a 955 on ebay and the guy sent me a 950. GRRRR. It’s an easy mistake to make but pretty annoying. That being said when I go to the link johnm… sent http://forums.plex.tv/categories/community-tuners at least one user is reporting it works fine (see quoted below.) So, I can’t imagine Plex blacklisting a model that is not on the officially supported tv tuner list. My hunch is this is a bug.

“Using default driver provided through Windows Update on Win10, device works as expected, Plex scans channels and records perfectly fine. Multiple Tuner detection and utilization works as well. Shows up as “WinTV HVR-950 BDA Tuner” in the list. Rebooting after installing the drivers is important, performance is inconsistent until a reboot. Multiple tuners recording simultaneously is not an issue. Live TV works fine in iOS. Good antenna that supports both UHF/VHF and strong signal is important as usual. Otherwise, tuners work 100% successfully.”

I changed the subject of this post since it is no longer about the 955Q, but is now the 950Q.

Post your questions in the community support thread. Are you running the same OS as the user that verified it is working for them?

No. I am running Linux. The only reports I have seen of the 950Q working is under Windows. I will post in the community thread.

950Q now works on my Windows 10 PMS, and I shared the comment here.
