HD HomeRun Connect 4k

I have a question for @barton_b_davis_gmail_com and this should probably be moved into another thread, moderators. I didn’t see a way to DM @barton_b_davis_gmail_com.

Barton, how does the HDHomeRun Connect 4K connect to the Synology?

I’m curious about getting OTA broadcasts with DVR recording and have been reading reviews of the HD HomeRun Connect 4k Flex on Amazon. Is this the model you have? Some of the reviews are very critical of the UI and I’m wondering how it’s working out for you and if you’d buy this make/model again if you were buying right now?

Thanks,
Robert

Homerun’s are network tuners. The server will see it on your network. You won’t be using the Homeruns interface to do anything in Plex

Be aware that AC4 audio is not currently supported by Plex. As a result, ATSC 3.0 recordings have no audio. There are multiple threads in the forum on the topic. Search with “ATSC 3.0” or similar terms.

Robert,
There’s an install process when you first attach the HDHomeRun Connect 4K to your network. Once you’ve completed the install, your Plex Server can detect the unit and interface with the guide to schedule recordings that are saved to the designated media folder on your NAS.

The unit on Amazon is the one that I’m using and I’m very happy with it. It has a native user interface for recording that is pretty clunky - which is why I opted to interface through Plex. If you have a PlexPass, all of your local channels are available and it’s quite easy to set up future recordings.

This is all very helpful and it looks like it could work for me though I am concerned about the issue of ATSC 3.0 recordings having no audio. Is there any way I can check that my stations are using ATSC 3.0? I’d hate to buy the unit and have nothing but silent recordings.

As shown on the Amazon page, the HD HomeRun Connect 4K has four ATSC 1.0 tuners in addition to two, ATSC 3.0 tuners.

You will need to tune the ATSC 1.0 channels, not the ATSC 3.0 channels, when recording broadcasts with Plex.

US stations currently broadcast ATSC 1.0 and will continue to do so for years.

Some stations are also broadcasting ATSC 3.0 signals. Among other things, ATSC 3.0 can support 4K HDR video and higher quality audio (AC-4).

From reading other forum threads, no stations are broadcasting 4K HDR video. Their ATSC 3.0 signal is the same as their ATSC 1.0 signal (1080/720/480).

I mentioned ATSC 3.0 / AC4, as some people were expecting to receive 4K HDR broadcasts and that is not happening.

See the links below for additional details.

This is all good news for me. Thanks so much, @FordGuy61!

To bad Plex doesn’t support nextgen channels!!!
