It was very easy to hook up the HDHomeRun Connect. I use PLEX Media server as well and it immediately found my Connect. I set up some shows to record. When I went to playback the HD shows (not the SD shows) I become extremely frustrated as the HD shows stop every minute or so to buffer. I also get this message:
“Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video. Check your network or try a lower quality.”
Why is this happening? Are there any settings I can change so this won’t continue to happen? It is very frustrating, especially after buying the Connect for $100.
I also had the HDHomeRun in the early days for Plex DVR and had similar issues. I ended up sending it back. I now have the WinTV Dual and it seems much better, but only had it a couple of days.
This is still an issue for me. Any luck with any of the settings? i can barely get the server to pull live streams up, don’t even ask about clients (has never worked for me).
What are you using to watch the recorded shows. How is your media player connected to your media server?
The recordings of ATSC are the clearest HD you can get. It is far superior to any cable or satellite, even streaming services HD. That being said, it does that because it is at a much higher bit-rate. ATSC is frequently 8-15 Mbps.
If you are watching this over WiFi that is your issue. A WifI connection is not reliable enough to stream. Your connection rate on it changes frequently as it adjusts. Either trans-code the HD to something with a lesser bit rate. Or connect your media player with Ethernet.
So my plex server and hdhomerun connect is all connected via cat6 cable. The plex server is a custom windows 10 machine that houses 2 HDD’s that all of my content gets saved to. When logging in to plex.tv through my plex server I find that live tv is showing the channels and what is currently playing on them, but it will not reliably pull up the stream. Now if I move to my living room tv (connected via apple tv on wifi) it will again show the current programming guide, but will not be able to view the live stream. Server transcoding is turned to automatic if that helps at all.
Oh. That sounds like a problem. Either there is a problem with your connect, or something is bottlenecking your network.
I’m using fairly cheap wireless extender to connect my connect to my home network. The location of the antenna is almost directly above ceiling over the router. So I’m getting no were near CAT6 speed. Still everything records fine. LiveTV on the other hand, is not so great. I will get regular hour glass spins. I’m guessing that is because I have transcoding in Plex enabled, and that adds delays. The recordings play back smoothly, so no data is dropped. It just isn’t streaming consistently in real time.
Try using the HDHomeRun software to view some live TV. One issue I find with this solution, is plex will have no way of knowing what your reception is like at any given time. I have a number of stations I receive from Buffalo New York. Today they all come in crystal clear. Yesterday, every single one of them was failing to display even a single frame. That is to be expected with broadcast television when the weather interferes.
