If Plex decided to officially support this, I’d fully convert over and Plex would become my primary media consumption outlet.
Not that it isn’t already, but I currently go outside Plex for live OTA and subscribed streaming channels, and really only use the DVR function. Packaging it all up into one place with a unified DVR would be PHENOMENAL.
@mojameslittle - You have to delete the DVR from Plex, then add it back so you can change the guide listing to another provider. You are probably using an OTA listing which doesn’t provide any of the cable channels, and Plex doesn’t currently give a way to change the provider after setup.
@kamhouse I did as you suggested and I got about 90% there. Works great for the most part, except for the strangeness with HDHomeRun’s service mixing Eastern/National/Pacific feeds… so some of the channels are 2 hours off.
I think the only way this will work 100% is if Plex provides a nationwide guide listing for HdHomeRun. Maybe they will…
@mojameslittle - I have come to about the same conclusion. The HDHomeRun app seems to have the correct “guide” so SiliconDust must be creating a guide for their specific lineup. They just need to feed it to Plex as an option.
Local OTA + HDHR West or HDHR East.
However, I don’t know how SD is creating their guide data. Plex may have to update some code to be able to pull a Local OTA (from whoever manages those) with a separate HDHR W/E guide from SiliconDust.
Considering Plex’s track record we probably can’t expect a fix before January. Unless SD had them already working on this behind the scenes for the last 6 months.
This actually doesn’t need to be to tough or take a long time to add. There are only two line ups (east or west) that Plex would have to load if you are using the Premium feed in addition to your normal OTA lineup.
What Plex would need to find out from SD is where the cutoff is geographically or ZipCode wise to know if they load the east or west coast feeds for the user.
As a user if you want to use this NOW and are on the east coast it’s harder because of the pacific feeds mixed in. You can roll your own EPG source and have plex use your source feeds which is what I do.
I find some of the comments in this thread kinda comical.
Not only is Plex absolutely going to ‘support’ this, they are most likely going to do a big blog post about it and have some new partnership specials with SD. The entire concept of what SD is doing screams Plex.
Right now they are likely working with Gracenote for guide data that works OOTB for SD’s unique lineup style, and testing smooth integration with adding a tuner that has local OTA data and data for a streaming service like this, which is a new feature that needs to be created and tested in PMS.
It sucks that they weren’t ready on day one, but that’s just how these things go sometimes.
I think the reason behind some of the fear mongering is due to Plex’s lack of communication about everything they do. If you look in the forums on SiliconDust, Emby, Channels, etc. you see the company employees posting from time to time. Even if it’s just to say such-n-such is too complicated and likely won’t happen soon.
Meanwhile on Plex we get simple sounding requests like proper management for Multiple Cuts of Movies and 6 years later it still hasn’t been implemented or even commented on why it is so hard to do.
I’m fine if this guide issue takes a month or maybe two to implement properly. I won’t be fine if January rolls around and it still hasn’t been fixed.
The problem is we have no clue what to expect with Plex’s track record and lack of communication skills.
I agree that this could have been communicated better - but the reality is at this point the Premium service isn’t quite ready - it should have been rolled out as an alpha or beta. So far, there are problems with the stream quality and problems with partner guide integration. I don’t believe reporting those issues is fear mongering - it’s just fact. Yes, these issues will eventually be resolved and when they are, I’ll give it a whirl. In the meantime, it’s informative to read about the issues and hacks some people are making to test it out. At this point, I’m not going to pay $35 / month to be a beta tester - especially when there are functional streaming alternatives with excellent quality available now.
Yeah, that’s basically where the service is, right now. I love everything about the concept, but it needs baking on all fronts–including partners like Plex–before it’s ready for general use.
The thing has been around for about a week. It’s going to take time for everyone to get on the same page. Honestly, SD should have rolled it out in some sort of testing/preview status. By not doing so we are all a little bummed it doesn’t already work with our preferred service/app.
You say this, but I literally just came to this thread to see if Plex is working with SiliconDust to support HDHomeRun Live TV. And I still don’t know.
Doesn’t seem all that comical at the moment. SchedulesDirect worked directly with the SiliconDust crew and they had schedules live within 24 hours.
Of course, SchedulesDirect works with software that allows multiple input sources. Plex does not right now. Which means it’s hard to combine locals with cable listings. I’ve wondered if this is a factor in the delay. Some communication would be nice.
Use WebGrab+ which has a bit of a learning curve but allows you to pull data from worldwide sources and have everything in one XML source file which you can then have Plex use.
I use this method for Plex and for Emby (seperate files). For Emby I’ve built a file that works with my OTA Quatros, Cable Card Primes, IPTV sources plus HDHomeRun Premium TV source.
I keep an excel spreadsheet with all my cards and IPTV sources with a channel matrix so I can best make use of the sources I have. IE disable card card local channels to force system to use OTA. Disable Premium channels for those on Cable as the quality is better (for now) or cable, etc…
they’ve stated on their forums they wanted to get to 5000 users to test the infrastructure and validate the scale factor, and then turn things up. I believe the turn up was last weekend from 2 to 5mb but i may be wrong, check their forum and the mega thread everyone is commenting in.
The HDHomeRun Premium TV pre-launch is open to 5000 US customers, with availability in Canada coming soon. If you miss the early round of sign-ups, we’ll let you know when we start expanding.
Then when asked about that number Nick responded with…
The initial 5000 number comes from an internal rollout plan relating to servers and bandwidth at launch. The scaling plan which will kick off once we have verified real-world performance of every part of the system.
So essentially they could start doing the scale up after just 1000 people signed up, they just didn’t want 100,000 people to sign up before they had a chance.
Also according to nateb from Silicondust (Thu Aug 23, 2018 4:08 pm), people are working on integration (with Plex).
It would be nice if Plex would actually talk to their customers on things like this instead of leaving it up to third party hearsay. Either say “we’re working on this and expect to have a fix in the next couple weeks” or “we are working on this, but it is a complicated fix that requires such-and-such which might take a month or two to test”.
