Multiple epg sources, for those with multiple tuners

I request, that we be able to set epg by box, and hopefully, a sub option to set epg by tuner.

That way, I can have the 3 prime tuners, going to cable, a dual tuner going to the antenna for ota, and the second tuner of the dual tuner, could be set to cable or a second antenna for ota from a different city, should I choose to…

I have 2 hdhomerun boxes, a prime, and a early dual tuner (and my Thanks for adding the older hdhomerun boxes to the dvr tuner capability list).
I setup originally for the prime, I later acquired a early dual tuner, with 2 coax inputs. The dual tuner is connected (for now) to a antenna, while the prime is connected to cable. Later I may want to migrate one of the inputs to the dual tuner to cable as well, or, possibly, to a second antenna, giving me tuning capabilities to 2 different cities…
I got my early dual tuner for $35, so, it becomes a great option, especially for those of us, who can pull in multiple cities ota (my case - detroit and flint).
Unfortunately, I have to set all the tuners to the cable provider, at this time, which means, that I don’t get all the ota options, as not all are provided by the cable provider, and, it took me closer to a hour to try and figure which of the ota stations I get on the dual, equated to which stations on the cable provider, and which stations, just aren’t options for dvr, because they are not available from the cable provider…

So, I request to be able to setup epg by box, and by tuner for those boxes that have multiple inputs to the tuners (like the hdhomerun dual).

[moderator edit: There is also a suggestion to mix & match across tuners and providers further down

I second this request.

I’ve tried solving it by providing my own xmltv guide, but I can’t seem to find a source with proper season/episode info :frowning:

+1 please, EPG per Tuner. CReating an XMLTV is inconvenient

Please add this feature. Ability to select individual EPG guides per tuner/dvr device. Mix OTA with Cable tuners…

Absolutely necessary to have the ability to select multiple epg providers and/or providers from multiple geo-regions. This is not the year 1985. Our Plex Media Servers and by extension, our Plex DVRs are portable (I can take my Shield from Canada to Tokyo in the same day and return the next day). Yet, in order for me to use the DVR service in both locations, I must delete the Canada tuner, install the Tokyo tuner, delete the Tokyo tuner and reinstall the Canada tuner. Why can’t we have the ability (for the Gracenote/Plex-provided list of epg providers) to set up a second or more physical location.

I am well aware that I can select my own provider and submit my own xmltv file. I have tried several paid services and have concluded that PMS and the DVR mishandles tvg-id, groups and categories enough times that this is not a viable solution. For the most part, I find that the integrated GraceNote information plays much better with PMS.

Seems like a simple fix to me. We can have multiple tuners. Please allow for multiple epg providers. After all, the DVR feature is absolutely useless without a proper epg.

Thanks.

Yes. Schedules Direct needs to be an Agent integrated into Plex for those of us who are paying for it.

Still hoping for additional epg’s.
I for one, am close enough, that I could have antenna’s pointing at 3 different broadcast regions, and on top of that, have cable internet, so it’s only a few bucks more for that, but, then I have to pay for every cablecard…
On top of that, I plan to move, once I find a house, so, I may have at least 2 ota broadcasting cities there, that require different antenna alignments, so, aim a antenna, feed a tuner, aim another antenna, feed another tuner, and so on…

Multiple guide sources for multiple tuners would be much appreciated. I can receive broadcasts from 3 DMAs and cable as well, so yes, please.

Same here I have the HDHomeRun CONNECT Quatro for Over The Air and the HDHomeRun Prime for my CableCARD. If I set up the Over The Air first, it limits the CableCARD to Over the Air guide. If I set up the Prime CableCARD first, I’m missing Over The Air Channels.

Any feedback from Plex would be greatly appreciated.

Plex only allows a single guide which is why the below statement is on the Supported Tuners Frequently Asked Questions (https://support.plex.tv/articles/226463767-frequently-asked-questions-dvr-live-tv/) page:

Can I add more than one DVR tuner?
Multiple tuners can be added from within the Plex Web app, provided you are using version 2.10.5 or newer. Tuners should be of the same type; all OTA or all cable, on the same Plex Media Server

Yes, John, we noticed, and you missed the point…
We have a need to have multiple epg’s, we have multiple tuners, and multiple boxes, that we currently use, but, we can’t get full use of them because they are on different sources (whether cable, or Ota from multiple cities) (I personally have access to cable, and 2+ Ota cities, with different boxes, and antennas), that require different epg’s to fully utilize. So we are stating our request that the ability to have multiple epg’s be added. That is why “feature request” is in the thread title.

I knew this was a feature request and was replying to @“pdilauro@hotmail.com” who asked for feedback from Plex. Plex may allow multiple EPG’s on a single server in the future but have not heard of any plans at this time. Best option now is to install Plex on two servers setup one with OTA and set the other to Cable. You could setup a script on one server to move recordings to the main server to have one source for watching recorded content if needed.

unfortunately, as you would have to set the recordings on 2 servers, and some stations would overlap, you would get a LOT of doubled recordings, wasting tuners, and processor time recording 2 copies of the same program at the same time… @johnm_ColaSC
this makes it impractical…
I have spent HOURS trying to match local ota to cable channels, and not all local ota is available on cable-even from the same city…
Furthermore, as you currently only have one guide, you cannot have more than one city providing channels…
As to his request for feedback from plex, I believe he was seeking a hope that it will be implemented… - which is reasonable, as there is already provisioning to implement multiple epg’s in the settings menu - without a massive page change, just adding more windows, and buttons, if you look, it is already grouped into a epg-source…
I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to implement multiple epg’s, for those who designed the dvr. It would involve aggregating multiple epg’s, and expanding the program searching to multiple epg’s, but, it is a computer, so, while it would take a few extra computer cycles, it shouldn’t be that hard for it.

Count me in on this one too. Ability to have best of both worlds…PLEASE.

Have you looked at zap2xml I pulls info from https://tvlistings.zap2it.com, plus with the -J switch you can merge it with another xmltv file. so basically you can create 2 accounts with zap2it and then make a script with zap2xml to download the first channel lineup, then run the next line with the -J option and download the 2nd channel lineup and merge the two.

I’m currently using this setup because there were a few channels missing the lineup for my postal code, so i used a different location to get the missing channels and get a complete guide.

Plus zap2xml properly handles multiple channels with the same channel # (ex: 12.1) unlike plex at this current time.

I hope this feature request has been accepted and is in the dev/testing phase as there is no reason to allow multiple tuners without allowing multiple EPG sources.

Another usefull reason to have multiple EPG even when only using 1 tuner, is that sometime the plex provided EPG doesn’t have all of the channels in the lineup, so you may need to supplement it with another EPG, or one from another postal code /zip code to get a full programming guide.

With direct support for tvheadend it would be easy to get the aggregate EPG, that would shift the burden away from the Plex developers from supporting a wide range of EPGs and complex configurations. It should be relatively easy to bring in some of the code from tvhProxy or one of the other existing libraries.

Someone already raised a request for this, consider supporting it:
