[Help] Constant Buffering streaming from PC to LG plex app

Server Version#: 1.15.4.993
Player Version#:

There is constant buffering on my 1080p and 4k video files. It buffers average every minute. I direct stream from my windows pc over ethernet direct to my LG B8 Web-OS TV. Plex has always been able to stream any video just fine up to a few weeks ago.
I have tried using Xplay, but that has the same results. I have checked my network for any bottlenecks and I feel it must be something to do with how plex is working.

My Lg TV is having the same issue. I’ve determined that it happens with all my movies formatted as MPEG1VIDEO. When I try to play it just shows a “Buffing” window. The video never starts. It shows the movie length and you can fast forward, but no video just buffering.

I’m on lg Plex version 3.98.0, WebOS version 3.8.0. I tried upgrading to the latest server version, 1.15.4.994, but that didn’t fix it.

I actually think i solved my issue not too long ago. My PC running plex server, was connected by ethernet to the Gig-e port on my router while my tv was connected to the standard 100mbps port. I tried switching my PC back to a 100mbps port, and that has seemed to have solved it.

So I reckon I’ve found a bug with having a plex server on a 1000mbps connection. Your standard 100mbps streaming devices cant handle it.

I also see that error message in the server log. I take it that is included in a reply from the Plex client installed on LG TVs. Plex appears to use the HTML TV APP.xml profile for all LG TVs. I have tried to create a custom profile with that name as well, but haven’t been able to eliminate that error message. The log shows that my custom xml profile is being used, but so far I haven’t got it to recognize those parameters for platform=webOS, platformVersion=3.8.0, and model=OLED65B7P-U in order for it to load my custom xml file. I also use a custom xml for DLNA but the name is for a slightly different model # which is the one shown in the default network settings on the TV beginning with [LG]. It appears that the model number reported by the Plex client is closer/same to the actual TV model number as shown on the back of the TV.

You will also see in the log that Plex does not recognize the TV is 4K. When using DLNA I have to always set the remote bandwidth to maximum, since it also appears to apply to the local network, the DLNA client preferences must also be set to 3840x2160. These settings will override any setting in your custom xml. They need to be checked after every restart as the remote setting will not save. The DLNA client preferences setting may be ok after a reboot, but not always (depending on the version of PMS), as well they may change if you play a video that fails to work, the settings often change completely.

Depending on the 4k video you are trying to play, you may wish to use the wireless interface rather than ethernet. According to the specs listed on LGs website, the maximum for H264/HEVC is 50Mbps. Many 4K videos exceed that. You can find sample video files (Jellyfish) that go up to 400Mbps. I found I needed to use the 5Ghz connection on the LG to avoid buffering up to 120Mbps. Above that the TV is the limiting factor. Note: the Jellyfish video files may buffer a little initially as the screen has numerous moving items at the beginning when using 100Mbps and higher rates.

I was initially testing this trying to get Plex to make better choices regarding what is direct played. It does not seem to be aware of all supported video/audio codes supported by LG. Primarily audio for my testing, such as vorbis, ac3, eac3. I also read on here somewhere that Plex is limited because of the HTML based client they have to use, so even though the codecs are supported and work using DLNA, or direct connection by USB they may not work using the HTML client.
