Device: LG OLED55B9PUA tried playing via USB gigabit Ethernet adapter AND 5GHz wifi (both stutters).
Server: Ryzen 9 3700x, 32gb DDR4 ram, wired connection into Unifi switch.
I’m direct playing (yes, I made sure it was direct playing) a movie to my TV and it constantly buffers (every minute or so). This happens when I use wired Ethernet and 5GHz WiFi. The WiFi AP is about 8 feet away from the TV (Unifi AP AC Pro). Whenever it buffers, the log shows the following: Apr 12, 2020 17:58:23.555 [0x152350db5700] ERROR - Unable to find client profile for device; platform=webOS, platformVersion=4.7.0, device=, model=OLED55B9PUA
When I cast the same movie to a Chromecast Ultra connected to the same TV, it buffers once or twice in the beginning but is able to smoothly play afterward with no buffering at all.
These results were observed with multiple movies, all of which had a bitrate of 70+ Mbps , 4k HEVC HDR. The fact that the buffering behavior is observed on both wifi and ethernet rules out a bad cable. Bad wifi can be ruled out because the chromecast has no problem playing the movie. There’s either something up with the TV, the plex app, or the plex server. Bandwidth issue can be ruled out because statistics from the switch (when trying ethernet) and AP (when using wifi) indicate the device is receiving over 100 Mbps.
Question: How are you using gigabit ethernet on the TV side? I have a C8 and must use wifi because of the TV only having 100Mbit ethernet NIC. Are you using a USB adapter with the TV somehow?
I’ve gone through all manner of heck with the WebOS app on a 2018 LG C8 because it’s hard to get bits into the set fast enough when the bitrate gets over 70Mbps or so. It would only have cost LG pennies more per unit to put a decent NIC in these expensive TVs.
Also having a problem on my LG OLED B7 and 4K content (4K UHD HDR movies). Doesn’t matter if I use wired ETH (100mbit) or 5GHz wifi the movie is buffering frequently.
My PMS is hosted on my Synology NAS on the same network and the NAS is using wired ETH connection. For comparison the movie plays fine on another Media Server+app combo.
Also my MacBook Pro (5GHz Wifi connection) plays the movie fine with the Plex MacOS app.
Plex web gui shows the file is direct playing and not transcoding video or audio.
I’m using a usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapter. I’ve tested it and am able to get speeds of 400+ Mbits on fast.com. Can’t believe a $1000+ TV doesn’t have gigabit ethernet. To force the TV to use the usb adapter, you just disconnect from WiFi and plug ethernet into the adapter.
Have you noticed that all of the files have a certain type of audio? Both xbox and webos versions of plex have problems with files which contain certain versions of high-quality audio in my experience.
I got so fed up with both an Xbox1X and a 65" OLED trying to run plex that I’ve bought a firestick4k for one tv and an AppleTV4K for the other to work around these and other outstanding issues wit the plex clients. It’s like a game of whack-a-mole where you pick which bugs you can live with in the optimal scenario.
I had no idea this was possible, and I have spent a fortune building a top notch wireless network with all of my iot junk on a different AP so I could get bits into my C8 fast enough to watch some of my 4K content. I’ll have to try this. Thanks!
Unfortunately it doesn’t matter IME what track you actively play. As long as it’s in the container with the video, it will cause problems. Sometimes when really bad it can cause the video to appears as a garbled-up mess in 1/4 or so of the screen when I experience the issue.
It could be unrelated, but you may want to start by looking at whether the files that give you problems all have a certain type of HDAudio. I came to the conclusion that was a problem I was experiencing on both my xb1x and c8, but I wasted a ton of time drawing that conclusion testing other things. One guy on here found that by remuxing and stripping out audio streams he could play the files without issue.
Well i am pretty sure in my case the problem wasn’t the files. It was actually a setting in the TV app which for some reason was always wanting to use Secure connections also in local lan.
Also my server settings were screwed so that it required secure connections from all. Turning it off for local connections fixed the stuttering.
I have also experienced something similar where my Android TV (Sony XBR900E) wouldn’t respect the encryption settings in the client/server settings, and the additional overhead from encryption would make the difference between watching a high bitrate stream successfully and watching endless buffering.
Interesting. Can you explain more please to check it on my place ?
I thing that the lags are a software bug or something related to settings effectively
In the settings of your client you can choose whether you want to use encryption all the time or just when content is not on your local network. On the server settings side, you can choose from those 2 options and also you can set encryption to never be used. I had set my server settings to prefer encryption only when talking outside of the local network.
You can determine whether encryption is being used by looking for the little lock symbol in the dash/Tautulli and whether the lock is open or closed while streaming. The Android TV Plex client would use encryption no matter what, even on a local network, unless I set the server to always unencrypted. Of course I don’t really want to leave the server set that way, and even the server settings web app will gripe when you set that option in such fashion.
However, on my high bitrate content, when I would set the server to always unencrypted, the Android TV would stream without encryption, and it seemed to make a big difference on a device which is low-powered compared to the CPUs in some of the other clients. I have one particular 4K remux that has an absurdly high bitrate, and I could play it well without encryption but it would stutter constantly with encryption being used.
As I said before, I got sick of mucking around with all of this on both the Sony and the LG TVs and bought an AppleTV4K and a Fire4K. The Fire4K Plex client still has major issues, but the stick has a decent wireless NIC and I can see an actual guide vs the trash Live TV view on WebOS. The ATV has an actual gigabit NIC and the client seems to work better on this device than any other at this point, so my entertainment life is fairly sane and frustration-free now. I’ve been fighting with 4K content problems on various Plex clients for years, unfortunately. I’ve learned way more about all of this than I ever intended, fighting constant problems. HTH
Thank you very much for your successful help.
I was wandering since 6 months how to fix these issues (lag in videos, exit from plex player after lag).
And I followed your solution. I disabled tls or secured connection. It’s was settle on Preferred but as you told it, I settled on DESABLED.
And everything is going RIGHT.
Not anymore lags ! Thank you !!!
Even on The Lion King 2019 with bitrate 165 Mbps…
Thank you so much !
I’m glad that what I’ve learned the hard way has been helpful to you! I wish that I could get Plex employees to listen to me on a few different issues, but they usually end up just closing my tickets. Enjoy!
