Plex library missing / not starting after disk migration and DSM upgrade

Server Version#: 1.25.0.5246-7000
Player Version#: N/A - WEB / Chrome

After a breakdown of my DS918+, I got a new DS920+. I moved my disks over, and everything seemingly worked great.
The moving to a new server with old disks, required upgrade of DSM to latest DSM 7 version.

After this, I have read some of the forum posts, and understand there are some requirements to get this to work.

But, not being all too techsavvy, nor patient enough, I have perhaps made some mistakes.

Uninstalled and reinstalled PLEX server service.
I renamed the PLEX share to PlexMediaServer
Checked all permissions of the PlexMediaServer share, aswell as all other shares, and I have seen that the internal user PlexMediaServer indeed has access to all folders with Read/Write access.
Unfortunately, it will not start up properly.
When It does start, it find no libraries, and require med to add libraries.

I had quite a huge server, with tons of work put down in sorting, name changes, searching and updates to get everthing perfect earlier.

Are there any way I can salvage the database that was, and get it working properly?

I desperately require some expert help for dummies here, so I spare myself the months of work and agaony to go through everything again.

Thanks.

@ChuckPa - It seems you are the one to ask about such things.

Thanks.

STOP!!!

  1. Stop the plex app you’ve installed
  2. Rename that share BACK to Plex!!!
  3. Uninstall + KEEP (if you have the DSM 7 app installed) to preserve your metadata.

Bottom line: You can’t bypass the process because DSM 7 placed severe limits on apps unless you fully understand how DSM 7’s new SDK works and what was implemented.

Read this,

  1. what changed
  2. Migration procedure 1
  3. Migration recovery/alternative process 2

Let me know when you’ve read them all.

Thank you kindly for the reply.
Below is the process I have now been through, and I am sorry if I seem ignorant - I am not very wise in the ways of NAS systems.

I have been through that documentation 2-3 times, but I still find the process hard to follow.
I guess I am at a wrong step of sorts.

I have uninstalled Plex Media Server as requested, and renamed the share “PlexMediaServer” back to “Plex”.
Instructions state I have to uninstall DSM 7, but this is, as far as I can see, not possible. That pacakge is not uninstallable, nor in any lists of packages as far as I can see, neither is DSM 6.

I have made a backup earlier of the PLEX folder, just in case. Just a raw windows folder copy, but I hope that will do the trick if needed.

I have downloaded the latest Plex Media Server from Plex Media Server downloads area, to make sure I have the newest one, also as requested.
Package:
PlexMediaServer-1.25.0.5246-cb2507e4d-x86_64_DSM7.spk

I have set the timeout to 50000 seconds.
Next step is to restart DSM 7 - And I am not sure what that means, since I thought that was the basic system OS? Restart the NAS? I have done that, several times.

So, I am a bit unsure about the next steps.
There is already a PlexMediaServer user under system users, old standard Plex user is gone.
All permissions for share Plex has been checked, and “PlexMediaServer” system users has Read/Write permissions. This is also checked on all share folders containing Plex media.

If you have a few more tips, let me know. I will hold the process for now, given that I might have jumped a few steps, and made some mistakes here.

Please check the PM I have sent you

To all following here:

We resolved the issue:

  1. Moved everything back to the Plex shared folder

  2. Verified “Library/Application Support / Plex Media Server” existed

  3. Deleted the DSM 7’isms from the “Plex” folder (deleted AppData)

  4. Manually set the permissions as shown in the “DSM 7 migration instructions” how-to

  5. Installed the package.

  6. Installation completed without incident.

  7. Upon completion, opened the NAS via http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web

  8. Claimed the server (which repaired the damage from moving things around)

  9. Settings - Authorized Device - Removed the old rogue values (8 hours vs 2 minutes old. — easy to tell which was the right one to keep)

  10. Confirmed all file permissions (shared folders) were ok.

  11. Task complete. some 8000+ files in under 30 minutes (including repair time)
