(Reposting from the Synology forums at the advice of the community)
I’ve seen a number helpful migration guides (e.g. here) both here and on the Synology forums on how NOT to migrate Plex Media Server from DSM6 to DSM7. The recurring themes seem to be:
Don’t upgrade to DSM7 while Plex is still installed on DSM6
Don’t use the built-in “Migrate” feature in package manager after upgrading
When uninstalling Plex from DSM7 to re-try the migration, don’t use the “Uninstall (but don’t erase)” option.
Sadly, I didn’t anticipate these special instructions, so I didn’t search forums for advice until I’d already done all three of these things.
Now, I’m having a hard time following the exising installation/migration guides because I can’t get the package installation started - performing a manual install in the package manager of the package downloaded from plex.tv just results in:
The operation failed: Please sign in to DSM and try again
So, how do I get this back on the rails? If it’s not too late, I’d love to keep my server configuration and metadata, but if that’s not possible, I’d settle for a fresh install (from my present positions, even that’s eluding me).
Here’s what I’ve already done, in order:
Upgraded from DSM6 to DSM7 with the manually installed plex.tv PMS package (NOT the Package Center maintained PMS package) already installed.
Attempted to run the Package Center Repair wizard - I updated the user permissions as prompted, but the migration was still unsuccessful.
Downloaded the DSM7 PMS package from plex.tv, and tried to install it manually - this didn’t succeed.
Uninstalled the PMS package from the Package Center - chose not to unregister the server from my account or delete any of the metadata
Attempted to install the DSM7 PMS package manually again, unsuccessfully.
Removed the legacy “Plex” shared folder, which by this point already contained no data (confirmed via SSH that it was completely empty). This didn’t change the behavior.
Any advice on either picking up this migration or getting to a point where I can start from scratch would be appreciated!
Package Center repair – bad but easily recovered from
please explain “this didn’t succeed”
uninstall - KEEP option (not sign out or delete ) – Good (this keeps all the data)
Legacy Plex folder – what is the capitalization please? Should be plex or Plex. I will help you fix that if desired (should have been a “Migration.log” regardless)
Attempt again to install the DSM 7 package - unsuccessfully – please detail
Please confirm the error message Synology is giving you? I think you’re getting the DSM timeout error (which is lame but manageable).
Did you review my migration instructions here
Or review the updated package structure which is effective 1.24.2.4973 ?
Initial steps to complete this migration
Control Panel - Security – Set the timeout value to 65535 & OK that. You can change back later
Sign out of DSM & back in (so the new timeout becomes effective)
SSH into the box again.
a. look for /volume*/@apphome/PlexMediaServer
b. in there should be “Plex Media Server” if your data is indeed intact
c. in that Plex Media Server directory will be all the directories you expect (Media, Metadata, etc, and your Preferences.xml file)
I unfortunately didn’t make a note of the error message I got the first time I tried this.
The shared folder was Plex (capital P), and it was already completely empty by this point - no migration log.
This is where I’m getting the The operation failed: Please sign in to DSM and try again message.
I attempted my best to follow these instructions, but I’d already gotten to the point where the installation won’t start (“Please sign in to DSM and try again”), so I couldn’t complete them.
Yes, but I’m not sure how to use this information to get the installation/migration unstuck.
Though I’d neglected to mention it above, I have done this already.
Yup, it looks like everything is there That means I should be able to recover the migration, right?
No Migration.log anywhere in that directory tree, however.
I made some progress - I noticed that some unrelated packages I was trying to install were having a hard time with my reverse proxy, so I tried accessing DSM using my local network IP address (without using, DNS, reverse proxy, or SSL), and then re-performing the PSM installation. This got me un-stuck - I was able to proceed with the migration steps as documented in the guide, and I now how a working PMS Installation.
However, my server loads to an FTUE, with none of my content.
Before I go recreating everything from scratch, is there anything else I can try to recover my data?
chown -R PlexMediaServer:PlexMediaServer . (don’t forge the .)
– this may spin a while so expect it –
While it’s running,
Control Panel - Shared Folders
Look for a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder.
If it exists, delete it
Now install 1.24.2.4973 or higher (.5033 is ok)
Sorry – I delayed posted.
To get your media seen, you need to grant permission for System Internal User PlexMediaServer to read (Control Panel - Shared Folders - EDIT the share).
