I read that Plex would be superior to the synology audio station so I wanted to set it up to see myself.
DS918+ with DSM 7.2.1
I installed the provided package. At the end it brought up some local address with a port that somehow wanted me to log in. Log in where? I’m already logged onto my DSM?
Apparently my local server does not work without an online connection to some server at plex? Sigh, ok. I create an account (as you can see here)
I log in on that screen and find I’m now configuring my local server through a website running at plex? Fine, whatever. Seems to be related to the requirement to access my media from outside local network?
What bothers me: the local ip + port.
I created a reverse dns and set up plex.mydomain.tld. How can I actually use that address to access plex? This totally confuses me.
It’s how I access audio station and other services/docker containers that run on the Diskstation. All got their own subdomain via reverse proxy.
I’m not quite understanding how the various pieces fit together
No, you don’t.
You are configuring your server using an app. The Plex web app, to be precise.
Whether you load it from your NASo, or from https://app.plex.tv doesn’t really matter. The data flow is the same. The app will communicate directly with your server. It doesn’t work like a “web site” hosted on plex.tv.
The server and the client are different parts and work independently from each other.
The server runs on your NAS, the client runs in your web browser. In order to communicate safely and to ensure that only authorized persons can access your server, both the client and the server are required to be linked to your user account on plex.tv
Plex is not like the other Synology apps.
There is no need for proxies or domain names.
All you need is to bookmark https://app.plex.tv in your browser.
(Make sure NOT to delete the cookies from plex.tv when the browser is closed.)
Next time you click on that link, it will automatically load the web app and access your server. If your internet connection allows for port forwarding, this will even work from outside your home network.
It is worth mentioning, in case you have not seen this yet, that the best Plex client for audio is Plexamp, and that unlocking all of the Plexamp features requires a Plex Pass. However, you can take it for a spin for free.
