Hi, I just upgraded my library to use the new metadata search (actually wishing I hadn’t, and instead read more about it here first). But maybe it isn’t the new indexing routine, and instead just a lack of knowledge on my part as to how to file shows classed as ‘TV specials’ by IMDB.
My challenge is specifically with a new show: “Wicked in Concert” (IMDB tt15326776). I don’t know whether this should go in my ‘Movies’ folder structure, or ‘TV series’ folder structure. I’m aware the ‘TV series’ area needs s##e## format to correctly index, so that didn’t really work, but putting it in the ‘Movies’ area also doesn’t work.
Does anyone have any tips for how to file ‘TV Specials’ and have Plex correctly grab metadata for them?
In Plex, “TV shows” mean exclusively “episodic” content – i.e. series.
What you have there is a one-off thing and therefore better suited in a “Movies”-type library.
HOWEVER: since this is only at most 2 days old, it might not yet be available in Plex. The metadata need some days to travel from TMDB or TheTVDB to plex.tv
Thanks a lot, @OttoKerner. That’s good info about the ‘episodic’ qualification; this certainly felt it should live in more of a ‘movie’ context.
I tried naming it as you suggested, but no joy. I also went the other way and tried to put just “Wicked” in the Match… (Fix Match) | Search Options | Title box, but the right listing doesn’t appear anywhere in the list of results to choose from. (The ‘Agent’ is just ‘Plex Movie’ there, by the way, nothing else in the dropdown to select.)
Your other info about the metadata ‘travel-time’ will hopefully be the key, then; I wasn’t aware that was the case. I think I thought my server was querying those databases directly, not going to a central Plex system that holds a copy of all those data, so I thank you for your clarification on that.
I’ll return and update in a few days with whatever happens. Fingers crossed until then!
Keep in mind: all movies need their own, individual sub-folder.
If you struggled before with matching an item properly, you might want to try the Plex Dance.
Thanks, @OttoKerner. I do have all movies in their own folders, so that part is all good. I love the name of the ‘Plex Dance’ you reference, so I’ll give that a try in a few days if no luck. In the meantime I’ve added the official poster manually (just so it looks nice for my sister; she’s living overseas and is a musical theatre professional, so will love the show), which is fine for now.
Just updating this for future visitors: the solution was that @OttoKerner’s guess about it being time-related (due to this particular special being only very recently released) was correct.
After waiting a few days I was able to select the Match… option and this time the correct option appeared in the list for me to select. I was also able to rename my file’s name and the movie’s folder name to just the short name ‘Wicked in Concert’ (i.e. without requiring the full name+tagline), and Plex was still able to locate the right option to show in the list of titles to choose from.
Thank you for the assist, Otto, and the confirmation about ‘TV specials’ being classed as ‘movies’ by Plex!
