Help - new install with plexpass doesn't record tv but generates all the pictures in the recorded shows section (but they don't play cause recorded file is 0 KB)

Server Version#:
Player Version#:
Don’t know how to even find the logs, so can’t provide that. This has to be something basic, but I don’t know where or how to look. Am frustrated dealing with the HUGE amount of screens that I have to wade through to do a simple DVR setup. Please help.

Note that the PLEX server works and displays menus on all my devices (Windows, LG TV, Amazon Fire, Roku). You can select to record from the Guide and it says it will. Then it apparently tries but the result is the dummy files in the filesystem and the tantalizing cover art that produces a READ ERROR after trying to open the files. Took me a while to figure out the read error was caused by a recording error. Don’t know how to find out why it failed and am loosing interest in the product since my immediate need for recording something no longer exists. I really like the thought of the product, but this has taken the fun out of it too early on…

Server version would be really helpful.

Go here: https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/web/general and then scroll down the left side to below your Server name (that’s really important to get the right version number), then under General, click on settings. The version number will be on the right, it will be 1.something (e.g. 1.16 or 1.1.7…)

I hope that upload is meaningful stuff. Thanks for your help!

I have the exact same problem. Acts like it is going to record but just creates files of 0 length and never does the recording. Windows 10 Home, latest version of Plex (1.18)

@darcilicious Don’t know what you did but the server started recording; Then it drifted to a period of no sound playing, but now it is working as expected (although I’m still in a wait-and-see mentality). I got so confident that this morning I upgraded to the latest release (1.18.0.1913) and it’s still recording and playing back (only tested on my computer so far, but what could go wrong…?) I was at the point of giving up, but it seems to be something that you did because I don’t think I did anything. So THANKS a lot for your help and concern. Perhaps someday I’ll get savvy enough about PLEX for you to explain what happened, but for now I’ll just take the win.
Looks like @nollert could use some help too.

Uhm… I’d love to take credit for this but I didn’t do anything… glad it’s working though! Enjoy the weekend!

Having Exact same problem here. Also running Windows 10 home. The log file does not give a clue. Jus leaves a 0 byte file.

What version of PMS do you have installed?

I would recommend rolling back to v 1.18.0 and see if that fixes the issue.

You appear to have installed the program files of Plex onto drive F:
But the Plex data folder is still residing on drive C:

This should be the other way around.
No, really.

Uninstall plex from F:

  • Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
  • deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
  • for safety, reboot Windows
  • download the installation exe of the newer version and install it, this time again on C:

(If you want to install an older version of PMS, take a look into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates)

When you have done that, move the plex data folder to a location where it has space to grow. However, you should avoid to move it onto the same mechanical hard drive which also houses your media files: Moving Metadata on Windows

I have the same problem. Just got the Lifetime pass and purchased a Hauppauge TV Tuner and scheduled a recording. Just went back to check on it and it shows a file with 0 bytes. Tried recording some other shows just now and the red “recording” icon shows up for a couple of seconds and then stops.

Running Win10 and PMS 1.18.2.2058

ETA: I think it is fixed. I clicked on an actual live show to play through Plex, and it had a little trouble getting it to play correctly. The video stuttered a bit and the audio was set to spanish for some reason. Changed the audio to english, and the video froze. So I clicked out and clicked back in and it started working fine. From there I was able to record shows with no trouble. Weird.
