Hi, as has been the case for some time now, none of my audio files will play from the NAS. Yet, somehow, it figures out how to play video files very easily. When selecting a title to play, it just buffers for about 5 minutes, which is longer than the song, and then spits out an innocuous error message that means nothing to me. As long as PMS can see the files, what am I doing wrong to make all of them non playable? BTW, I have installed the latest spk for my NAS, which is dated June 08. It is hard for me to believe that PMS can transcode all types of video containers, but somehow cannot figure out how to play a simple MP3 file. Does anyone have a dependable debug method for fixing this type of problem?
when you say “MP3 file”… do we talk about actual mp3 files or some different type of audio?
would you mind sharing the error message? … maybe it’ll help somebody to point you towards a fix.
Hi tom80h,
Error message is ‘something went wrong playing your media file’ , a really helpful error message. And yes, the files are actual mp3 files, which are playable when located on an external drive. But I was hoping that Plex could play music files from a NAS, as it can obviously play video files. I have no idea what to change here, as it can obviously find the files, otherwise, it wouldn’t show them as available to play, right?
If i may? When you get the error ‘something went wrong’ on Synology, it usually has to do with permission to read. PMS needs to communicate those little details better (which they are working on) but doesn’t yet. The best next step is to make sure user 'plex as read permission to get to your files on the NAS or external drive. (By default, plex doesn’t have read permission to external drives)
You might have to go to file station, right click the media directory, click properties, and then see what permissions are. If you think user plex doesn’t have or might not, you can force apply permission ‘for this folder, all subfolders and files’. You shouldn’t need this fine grain but it does happen. Also, occasionally Synology drops permission for user plex at the top of the music share. this is under Control Panel - Shared Folders - Edit the share - Permissions tab.
ChuckPA, I am guessing that you are on the right track with this answer, but after trying to accomplish what you have mentioned, there is no change in Plex behavior. It still plays video just fine, while NOT being able to play any music files. I will talk to Synology tech support, but they turn me away as soon as I mention Plex app, saying they do not support 3rd party apps. All of this leaves me in the same place, which is just so frustrating…
Trumpy81, I am just using Plex app on iOS, latest version. Refuses to play ANY mp3 file. How do I get the log files from an iOS device, under privacy settings? Since I have more than 1 PMS, the same files that fail under the NAS plex server, will play fine when using the PC plex server. But obviously, I am much more constrained by space on the PC side, so I was hoping to use the NAS PMS.
BTW, when I try to play music files from the PC using Plex(NAS), I get the following error…Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted. Which is weird, because it scans the NAS to build the library just fine, or at least, appears to. Obviously, I am doing something wrong, but if it would give me a clue what to change… I should mention, my main goal here is to be able to stream music when away from my LAN. I thought that Plex could do this, since the server is residing on the NAS hardware? I am probably using the wrong terminology here, and I apologize for that. Thank you for your input…
Thanks, but after talking to others who have tried using Plex as a music server on a NAS, it is apparent to me that the model I have performs way too poorly when using Plex.
