Playback Error: please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted

Server Version#: Synology NAS DS412+ DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 3 *
Player Version#: Plex Media Server 1.18.1.1973-0f4abfbcc *

*Please note I was on older versions but in trying to fix my problem have updated to these versions - yet the problem persists.

Apologies in advance - this is my first post in this forum and I am not the most technical person in the world!.

I have been using Plex on my NAS for a couple of years with very few (and even then, only very temporary) issues. I have my media stored on the NAS in the following file paths:

NAS Share/Media/Movies
NAS Share/Media/TV Shows

Plex Media Server is installed on the NAS, and on several Amazon Fire Sticks around the home.

In two years I have not ever had any issues locating or playing video files on the NAS.

Yesterday afternoon, I was mid-way through watching a film when playback suddenly stopped, showing a connectivity error. I did everything I could think of to fix this - rebooting router, rebooting NAS, rebooting Fire Stick, ultimately even updating NAS DSM, updating PLEX (manually), and still no joy. I have tried refreshing/re-scanning my media libraries in PLEX - but whereas before this took a few minutes, it now takes seconds and clearly is not finding anything.

The files have not moved location on the NAS. Via my Windows PC I can navigate to them on my network and play them without any issues. I have not needed to adjust anything filepath-wise on my PC to do this.

(Incidentally I also use Logitech Media Server, driven via Squeezebox on a Raspberry Pi - to organise and play my audio files from the NAS, located at filepath NAS Share/Music iTunes filepath. This is unaffected and LMS finds and plays the music files without issue).

When I launch PLEX via a Browser (PC or iPad) or via any Fire Stick, my NAS Share ‘Movies’ and ‘TV Shows’ library thumbnails still all appear as before - but if I attempt to play any of them I encounter a pop up stating:

"Playback Error: please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted. "

I have tried signing in/out, rebooting, updating, allowing insecure connections, you name it - but no change to the issue.

The folder on the server is clearly mounted as I can reach it via my PC. For some reason, PLEX seems unable to recognise that it is mounted, so cannot ‘find’ the files.

In Plex (via a browser) I have tried to add a new Media Library to see if this will kickstart anything. However, when I BROWSE FOR MEDIA FOLDER it shows:

(Root folder)
volume1
config

when I highlight volume1 the right hand side of the panel expands to show the sub folders, which include folder ‘NAS Share’.

However when I click on ‘NAS Share’ it does not expand to show any sub folders (even though they clearly exist). Instead the right hand panel just shows ‘< Back’>.

I do not believe I have changed anything to cause this issue. Has anyone else experienced similar and overcome it? Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated, so thank you in advance for any comments.

Check this please. “Not available” is an indication Synology burped again. (it does that and nothing we can do to bypass).

Hello - thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to direct me to this fix - it has worked perfectly and PLEX can now access all my files once more.

Much appreciated!
