Hey everyone,
Recently I changed over from my desktop running my media server to a dell r710 server with dual Xeon processors and 24 gb of 3 channel ram. I currently have 6 4tb drives in it and a small ssd for the os. Had a hard time getting my windows server iso booted into is so right now it’s running Windows 10 pro but all I am doing on it is Plex. My problem is with large 4K streaming files it buffers a lot. My home network is all wired with 1000mhz cat6a going through a Dell 48 port gigabyte switch. Large 1080p files everything plays fine but I can’t figure out why the 4K files buffer so often. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the video is transcoding you will definitely see buffering. You don’t mention which CPUs are in your system. The Dell website says it uses the Xeon X5500/X5600 series. None of those are capable of transcoding 4K video.
Note that the LG & Samsung Ethernet port is 100 Mbps. If you’re playing high bit-rate video it will buffer, even if direct playing. The bitrate shown in Plex is an average for the movie/show. It may burst to much higher rates at times.
Which Amazon FireTV? If you don’t know, look in Authorized Devices. You’ll see a code such as AFTMM. That can be cross-referenced to the FireTV Device Specifications site to find the model.
The only thing there is the one 4K movie I have been trying to watch and it is direct stream on video but transcoding on audio. The cpus are dual 5640. The fire TVs are the toshiba 4K one is a 55” it’s model number is 55lf11u20 the other is a 50” and it’s model number is 50lf11u20. Both TVs show up on authorized devices as AFTKMST12. I think you must be right about the ports on the back of the lg and Samsung as the fire TVs seem to play with no trouble. If your know of any other suggestions that might make it work better I would be grateful. Thank you.
