Help! Plex Media Server Won't Launch

The registry does not get created on install but later when plex media server is launched

At the end of the install (using an admin account) you launch plex media server.exe and it will open the default browser (sometimes browser extensions or security settings cause issues and may need to repeat the install with different default browser set) - this initial browser session goes through steps to create the libraries

please raise a new topic for your problem as the topic you attached yourself to relates to the server not launching

If the problem is specific to the Plex for iOS app you have installed on the iPad then the forum would be Plex for iOS

There is a wealth of support information on http://support.plex.tv

Hello, this issue would have better raised in it's own thread.

Any ways, see the following article: Repair a Corrupt Database. For step by step windows instructions, see post #8 by MovieFan in this link: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/150955-corrupt-database/?p=868217

If you don't have much of a library and are willing to start over, you could just delete plexapp.plugins.library.db and restart the server. If you continue to have problems, I think you should start a new thread as the underlying issues differ from the OP and you.

Hi, I'm having the same ( or similar ) problems.  I've looked over the question in the forum, but I have NO idea what you guys are talking about when you have tried to help others.  It's hard not to get frustrated ( like some above have) when the initial download instructions say "EASY".  Your directions sure seem complicated to me.

First describe the issue you are having and attach a screenshot

Second see if you can find this file

C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs\Plex Media Server.log

where xxxxx is the username you launched Plex Media Server.exe in

If you can find the file, attach it here using 'More Reply Options' and 'Attach Files' buttons

check the windows registry to see if there is an entry for this key

KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\LocalAppDataPath

If there is, check that the path it contains is valid and permission right for the account you launch Plex media Server in

If there isn’t an entry, look in the windows application event for any plex crashes

Thank you so much for the answer, after a system crash one of my external harddrives sometimes forgets to turn on and the path was directing there. Much <3

OMG this fixed my issue - i rebuilt my vm that used to run plex and at some stage i moved the home/appdata directory to a secondary disk. muppet me forgot this when rebuilding and plex stopped launching after the first few launches (wierdly) this trick did it for me. I am a little suprised i didnt come across this forum post before as i have been googling this for a few days. For the record of anyone reading this. i had the issue where plex would not launch - a system tray icon would pop up but as soon as i moused over it would disappear. no event logs, no indication, nothing. i repaired .net reinstalled plex multiple times. ran .net cleanup to no avail.

Simple solution. Thank you sa2000 you are a life saver!

Im having an issue where in my media server don’t show up at all please help

I can see you have a server logged into your plex.tv account - so should be accessible. Please raise a separate forum topic if you have problems with screenshots showing the issue and what plex client apps you are having the issue with

I’m having this same issue, however, my registry is not showing this key at all. Does that mean that is my problem? Or do some installs simply not have this key? I tried adding the key, but it did the same thing, and to be honest, I wasn’t quite sure where to direct it to. Everything was fine, then my house had a short power outage, and when I booted back up, Plex won’t launch

If the key is absent, it means default location for the app data - which would be
C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\AppData\Local

Failure to launch would normally be due to invalid app data path (not in your case), database corrupt, or tcp port 32400 or 32401 in use by other program.

Look for logs in folder C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs

@rgrotegut you might be having the same issue I was having yesterday. There has been a windows update (KB4013429) that has broken many media applications. If you have it, try uninstalling it to see if it fixes your issue. It did for me. It had also broken my HdHomerun app and SiliconDust is currently in contact with Microsoft to try and fix the issue.

Same problem ,after uninstall of KB4013429 all works again

If there is a new issue with a KB from Microsoft please could you see if there are any logs for Plex Media Server. Is it exiting on launch and disappearing from the system tray icons?

Is this happening on version Plex Media Server 1.4.3 ?

Logs would be here by default
C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs

Thank you @kenolk I had the same issue. The new windows update on Win 10 (KB4013429) prevented my media server from loading. The icon would briefly show up in my system tray, then disappear after attempting to click on it. The PMS would not populate in the task manager processes. I also checked my registry and did not have the (LocalAppDataPath) value. I check my folder and had the error logs in (C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs). After uninstalling the windows update (KB4013429), and rebooting the computer, I was then able to launch PMS again properly. I forgot to check my server version after the reboot, however it was due for an update. The server is now running (Version 1.4.4.3495), so it was a version prior to that, which has an issue with windows update (KB4013429). The Crash Uploader log file listed (Version: 1.3.4.3285-b46e0ea). I have not tried to reinstall the windows update (KB4013429) yet, to see if it will also affect this more updated PMS version.

It is very possible that the faulty CompPkgSup.dll that was in cumulative patch KB3216755 is now also in cumulative patch KB4013429 (March 14, 2017—KB4013429 (OS Build 14393.953) - Microsoft Support). If it is this problem then Plex Media Server version 1.4.4 which is now generally available has a fix (or change that avoids the windows bug)

I had this same problem yesterday with the windows update - had to uninstall it. Note, however, that version 1.4.4 has an issue that causes Tivo Bolt and Tivo Minis not to work properly, so I had to stay with version 1.3.4.3285. Unless 1.4.4 has corrected the issues with Tivo, then moving to 1.4.4 will not be an option from some of us.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Please tell me which is the best forum post that you have for the Tivo issue ? and are there any logs.
