Hi everyone,
I’m having a frustrating issue with remote streaming quality on my iPad Air 4 and hoping someone can help.
The Problem:
I just purchased the Remote Watch Pass and I’m streaming 4K content from my friend’s server. Even though the player shows “HDR 4K” and I have quality set to maximum, the video looks pixelated and low quality.
This suggests I’m receiving a much lower resolution stream that’s being upscaled to fill the screen, causing the poor quality.
File Details:
Resolution: 3840 x 2160 (4K)
Codec: HEVC (H.265)
Bitrate: 13,968 kbps
Container: MKV
What’s Confusing:
My friend (the server owner) says he can stream the same content remotely with perfect 4K quality. So the server and file aren’t the issue.
Current Settings:
Remote streaming quality: Maximum
iPad Air 4 with latest Plex app
Good WiFi connection (20mb/sec and also tested with 5g)
Questions:
Why would I receive a small/low-res stream instead of the original 4K?
Are there specific settings I’m missing for iPad remote streaming?
Could this be a device compatibility issue with HEVC 4K on iPad Air 4?
I’ll attach screenshots showing the original aspect ratio issue and file information. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE - Problem Isolated to My Account (NOT RESOLVED):
After further investigation, I’ve discovered this is NOT a network or device issue, but appears to be account-specific. This might be useful for others experiencing similar problems.
Critical Discovery:
When the server owner logs in with my credentials on his phone via cellular network: Low quality streaming
When the server owner logs in with his own credentials on the same device/network: Perfect 4K quality
This confirms the issue is tied to my Plex account, not connectivity or hardware.
Additional Testing:
Connected my Windows PC to 10GB fiber at the server location: Still receiving same poor quality
Different devices, different networks, different locations: Problem persists with my account only
What This Suggests:
Something in my account profile/settings is forcing quality limitation or transcoding, while the same server streams perfectly to other accounts.
For Others Experiencing Similar Issues:
If you’re having persistent quality problems that don’t improve with network/device changes, try having the server owner test your account credentials on their device. This can help determine if the issue is account-specific rather than technical.
Questions for the Community:
Are there hidden account-level quality restrictions that aren’t visible in standard settings?
Could certain Remote Watch Pass subscriptions have different quality tiers?
Is there an account-level setting that forces transcoding even when “Play Original Quality” is selected?
Has anyone successfully resolved account-specific quality limitations?
Server Owner Confirmation:
The server owner confirms he can stream the same 4K files perfectly remotely with his account, ruling out server configuration issues.
Still Seeking Solution:
The problem remains unresolved. Any insights from the community would be greatly appreciated, especially from users who may have experienced similar account-bound streaming issues.
Thanks for any help you can provide!
Note: I’ve also contacted Plex support directly about this account-specific behavior and waiting reply
As suggested by the support, this is the log of the iPad downloaded just after the issue. The log from the media server will come by Friday
