My Plex Server is hosted on my primary desktop at home with ports forwarded to allow outside internet connection. On my phone, Roku, Xbox, PS4 and everyone that is sharing my Plex Server can access the content no problem.
The issue I am running into is my work computer. When I log in to Plex on my work computer, which is behind a company VPN, it says my server is unreachable. I can access Netflix, Disney +, Hulu, Amazon, etc, but Plex is a bust.
Is their a setting I am missing? Or do you think it’s simply the work VPN? I have no idea what VPN my work computer is on or uses, unfortunately. Curious if anyone has a similar issue.
If you are using a company-supplied VPN, then your company is also very likely supplying the DNS service.
And many companies filter out either the domain plex.tv and/or the TLD .direct at the DNS level. Both of which are essential for contacting your plex server from outside your home network.
Unless you are good friends with the network admin of your company, I think there is no way to make it work.
Hmm, I am able to access Plex.tv, Plex Forums, but when I see my server on Plex.tv and select like say, “Audio Books” it says, “unreachable” then has the link to reload securely. If I select that it takes a moment then comes back and says unreachable.
I’m assuming it’s still the same issue of the DNS or the .direct you mentioned?
Secure access to your server goes via a subdomain on the plex.direct domain (which your server gets automatically as soon as you sign it into a plex account). If name resolution of the .direct TLD doesn’t (reliably) work, you get no access to your server.
There may be additional filter mechanisms deployed on your company’s network. Of which I have no knowledge.
