Server Unavailability

So when I try to use plex to connect to a server a colleague has shared with me I can’t connect to it, and I also can’t connect to my own server in general. I’m not sure if it’s a problem with Plex or something bigger than that. It was working when I first was using it, but then it just stopped. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated

In my experience this is often caused by:

  • VPN software on your computer
  • anti virus software which tries to decrypt and inspect Plex’s data packets, thereby rendering them invalid
  • Your ISP’s DNS server. Try to switch to either Google’s (8.8.8.8) or OpenDNS (normally this is a setting in your router. You can also override it in the network adapter settings of your PC.)

Thank you for the quick response I will check if any of those are the causes for my problem. My assumption is that it will be either my anti-malware program or a vpn software that I have, but I don’t use it and I don’t pay for it.

At the moment, I uninstalled both my malware and the possible vpn application, and I’m still having the problem, I’m assessing the issue on my macbook, so I’m not quite sure if that has anything to do with this either.

Try using a different DNS server. Some ISP’s DNS servers really are performing poorly with the .direct TLD, which is what Plex clients are using to find your server.

How do I use a different server? Is that in my plex settings or on my computer myself?
