I can play transcoded 4k files that have reduced bitrates but are using the same codecs, but for some reason I can not direct play remuxes of blu ray files. Attached is my logs. The video that won’t direct play is Avengers EndgamePlex Media Server.log (8.0 MB)
SpiderMan: Far From Home and Frozen II also transcode.
DEBUG - [Now] Device is Android (Fire TV Cube).
DEBUG - Avengers: Endgame - video.width limitation applies: 3840 > 1920
DEBUG - MDE: Cannot direct stream video stream due to profile or setting limitations
The FireTV Cube is connected to a 4K TV, correct?
TV make & model?
Plex app version?
Which FireTV Cube, 1st gen or 2nd gen?
The 1st Gen Cube will not direct play 4K HDR rips/remuxes/etc using the Plex app. Not sure why, just know that mine does not.
If 2nd gen, check your FireTV (not Plex app) settings. Try setting display to 4K, not Auto/Best/etc.
When playing movie, choose AC3 audio, not TrueHD. No FireTV device supports TrueHD audio, so TrueHD always transcodes.
Also, turn off subtitles if enabled. On Android TV devices, if the audio is transcoding, enabling subtitles forces a video transcode.
Not sure if FireTV Cube is on a different app version or not, but FireTV Stick 4K’s are having issues playing 4K HDR files. It’s being addressed (hopefully) in this thread:
I played 4K HDR files last week and they Direct Played fine, this week, they’re transcoding video, says Bitrate or Resolution limitation, but these files are files that played fine last week. So I think something in either the recent server update, or the most recent app update caused it.
The fact the OP is able to play transcoded 4K files leads me to believe (possibly) that his files are no longer HDR, they may be SDR since he/she transcoded (depends on the method used). But for sure, none of my HDR files are playing at all (Without transcoding), and all of my SDR content (still x265/HEVC) is playing without triggering transcode.
Sideloading an older version of the Fire TV Plex Client fixed the issue. Here’s the version that fixed it.
