Help with Episodes not Working

Hello,

I am new here, just started trying to get my Plex sorted out. I have uploaded about 150 episodes from a few different shows so far and all but two of them are working fine. I read (after uploading) that you shouldn’t upload files directly into a library that is being actively scanned by Plex, and I think that may have been what I did that caused this problem, but I cannot fix it.

Both files have metadata associated with them, however when I click on the episodes they have “None” under the Video and Audio sections (one example below, the second is Episode 14 of the same show/season):

If I click on “Get Info” the file directory is correct but it only has information listed under the “Part” header, nothing in the media section unlike the other files. If I attempt to play it, I get an s1001 error code, which apparently is something with the Network, however everything else is playing fine and uses the same library (this code happens both on the Web App and on my Xbox One app). If I attempt to play the original file on my drive it works fine.

I have done the Plex Dance several times and also attempted to change the file names to different episode numbers that didn’t exist and then change them back, but to no avail. I clicked “Analyze” on both episodes at about 0730 this morning and when I came back to the computer at 1500 they both still had the analyze circle going. I have searched through the Forums and I can’t find an answer so far.

Hoping someone here can assist me! Please and thank you!

Verify that these files do play in a regular desktop video player, like MPC-HC.
(don’t use VLC, because VLC is like a sewage works for defective video files. It may mislead you about the status of the file because it will often play seriously broken files).

Thanks for the quick response!

I will check that when I get home, just left for work. Thanks. I was using VLC, which I guess I shouldn’t use to test anymore. I have these files on Google Drive and it did work when I played it on the Drive though as well, not sure if that is similar to using another desktop player or not? Thanks again.

Well @OttoKerner, thanks for your help! As it turns out, after finding an old version of MPC-HC, it won’t play the two files that aren’t working and plays other test files. So that must be the problem. I will get to re-ripping!

Your help was and is much appreciated!

@Lost-Dingo I’m also new here and having a similar problem. Was the issue that you ripped them directly to your library? That’s what I did and they are also showing “none” under video and audio. What did you do to get them to work, rip them to your local machine and then manually copy and paste to the library? Any help and as much detail as you can provide would be greatly appreciated…thank you!!

Hi @m_wasson74, I am sorry to hear that you are having a similar issue.

The issue for me I think occurred during my upload from my computer to the drive I use for Plex; the file itself corrupted somehow during the transfer. Once I re-copied over the original file, it worked fine (I did check the original file first to see if it worked, i.e. playing it in MPC-HC).

The issue you are referring to could be that you had your library scanning while you added files, but I don’t know enough about that. The “Plex Dance” might help if you haven’t done that, but definitely make sure the files play in something like MPC-HC to make sure they actually work as expected.

@Lost-Dingo, thank you for your prompt reply! Based on this thread, I found that the files only play audio when I use Windows Media Player. I will try re-ripping them and this time just rip to my computer first and then copy the file over to the drive I use for Plex.

Thanks again!!

@m_wasson74 no problem, I hope that works! Good luck!

@Lost-Dingo, well, I had some luck. I re-ripped a TV show to my local computer and then copied to the drive I use for plex and that one worked!! However, I’ve since re-ripped more shows from the same DVD and they all play just fine locally using plain old Windows Media Player. I then copy the shows to the drive that I use for plex and they do not play from that drive using WMP. Any thoughts? What is the preferred way to move the files from the computer up to the drive used for plex?

Thanks!!

@m_wasson74 I am glad you had some success with the first attempt. I don’t really know what is going on with your latter attempts though. Is it having the same issue on Plex where it shows “None” in the Audio and Video tracks, or did you not try and use them there because they didn’t play with WMP? It seems odd to me that the same file worked before moving it but not after, unless some sort of corruption of the file occurred during its movement…

I have had an issue once where the item didn’t show up in Plex at all but that was because the file name was too long (it was excessive though, 75 characters or something).

I have no idea if there is a preferred method, but I rip my stuff to my local drive, then test it quickly with MPC-HC. Then I just drag the files in Windows Explorer so they get copied over to their final location on the drive my Plex library performs it scans. I have automatic library scanning turned off on my Plex server to avoid any errors there, and so once it has all completed moving I do a manual scan. At that point I usually make sure all of the files have something listed under Audio and Video in Plex other than “None” to avoid the issue initially mentioned in this post; I feel it would take too long for me to try and watch every file in Plex in order to make sure it works, so this is my play test. I might play an episode a season or something just to confirm it works and leave it at that.

I don’t know if that is helpful or not, I hope so. If not, I suggest making a separate post/question and hopefully someone else much more knowledgeable than myself can help (I imagine because this post is marked as “Solved” it wouldn’t get as much foot traffic, so to speak). Best of luck!
