I know plexamp is not officially supported on shield tv, but I really want to be able to listen to my music through my sound system without losing loudness leveling, sweet fades etc
I’ve read people had success by side loading, that’s it’s just janky to set up and you need a mouse, but then it works fine for controlling remotely, which is fine I have a mouse and was willing to spend some time to set it up.
But when I installed it I was able to easily log in using a code and my phone which was not what I was expecting, and then it goes straight to a screen saying it’s ready to be controlled.
This sounds way better than I was expecting in theory, however either nothing shows up in my devices to connect to on my phone, or if it does show up it cannot connect.
Struggling to find anyone on the internet whose plexamp on shield tv even looks like this instead of just like the actual mobile app so can’t find the info to solve it.
Because I’ve never heard of anything like this I’ve attached a picture for reference.
This is something of an experiment, we aren’t sure it will go anywhere as yet so it may not be in future releases. It’s possible to send music from from the “cast” menu on other Plex clients on the same WiFi network using Plex Companion (I’ve only tested sending with Plexamp on Android). It should show as a Plex device with the name “Android”.
Thank you. I will look again when I get home but it wasn’t available as a Plex device to send to from plexamp on my phone all the times I tried yesterday and this morning.
I thought it did once but just failed to connect, but by the sound of it that was the regular Plex app on my tv and this one hasn’t shown up at all.
Do you have any suggestions for that or is it just a case of wait and see since it’s experimental?
We won’t be offering much support because it’s not really a feature . Having said that, iirc there was a bug where Plexamp on any platform needed to be force stopped and reopened after sign in to receive a connection because the companion receiver wasn’t starting properly. Otherwise make sure sending from one Plexamp to any other Plexamp instance are functional on other devices on your network, as it’s essentially the same for all.
Thanks I will have a look at that in a bit, fingers crossed. Will report back as if it’s still not working perhaps there will be some unofficial advice from a user who’s managed to lock it into working lol
Ok, sorry for the delay. I have tried the force stop and there was no change there. I don’t actually have another instance of plexamp to test with, however I can connect to the normal Plex app on my shield tv using plexamp on my phone so I don’t think it’s the plexamp on my phone that is the issue.
Would be great if anyone who’s got this working has any unofficial advice, cheers
You should be able to send from Plexamp on your phone, to the desktop Plexamp app. Or if you have multiple phones, from one to another, or from Plexamp to the Plex app. Do these scenarios work?
Hi, sorry for the big delay. So if I put it on my computer the only devices that show up to connect from my phone are the computer, and the shield, but as a Chromecast device, not as a plexamp instance
If I tap to connect to the computer, the first time it says it cannot connect, if I try again there is no response at all
Edit: if I open the normal Plex app on the shield, that does show up, but won’t connect
Ok so that has added some settings to the shield tv where I can now see I am logged in as my admin account, with no option to switch user, only sign out.
That’s not the account I use for listening to music, but I temporarily switched to that account on my phone and it does then see the shield tv plexamp instance. Unfortunately it still won’t connect.
So we’re getting closer. A switch user option on the shield would be excellent so I can use the account I want, and so my family can easily use theirs too, but also whatever is going on with the connection issue.
I saw the feature here, just sideloaded the plexamp app on my Shield, and it’s awesome!
The remote doesn’t work yet, but it works great when casting from my phone. Love this feature, fact that I can use my shield as player and have the cover art displayed on the tv.

Just to update, the newest version loaded on shield tv can now both be seen and connected to from my phone when both plexamp instances are on the same account. Unfortunately on the shield tv that is my admin account, not the one I actually use.
If we can just get a “switch user” instead of just “sign out” option on the shield tv plexamp this will now work perfectly
Are you concerned about play counts being recorded on the admin user or similar? Or does casting fail when you send from the account on your phone to the one on the TV?
No, it’s just that I use my admin account for only admin, I don’t watch or listen to anything on it just to make sure that I or anyone else watching with me can’t accidentally mess with something (in other threads I’ve been in this actually seems to be a really common use case). I have a different full account in my Plex home for my personal use.
So I can certainly work around this by using my admin account when I want to use the shield for music, though it won’t have any of my playlists or user history from the account I actually use, I’m just putting it out there as a “would be nice to have at some point if it’s not too difficult”

Yep it’s a total other full account thats in my Plex home for myself, made with a separate email, unique username etc.
I did try logging out then signing back in with the other account. When I went to the page to put in the code in my phone it confirmed I was logging in as my other account, the tv logged in, checked settings, still my admin account. So, no idea.
I’ll take another look at it at some point, probably something I’m doing wrong tbh!
