Want to start off by saying that I’m new to Plex.
I am having issues with subtitles in specific movies, the movies being Rise/Dawn of the planet of the apes. A major issue I’ve found with it is that there’s a lot of sign language in the movie, and for some stupid ass reason subtitles for the sign parts never work unless I’m playing on an actual blu-ray player. I can’t figure out how to enable subtitles just for the sign language parts. I went through all the settings and FAQ’s and can’t get it working. When I use opensubtitles.org I get all subtitles except for when characters are signing in the movie. I downloaded subtitle tracks that are listed as only having the apes lines, however that doesn’t work at all, Plex won’t use them, I followed the guides on using local subtitle files but they won’t work at all, it not even detecting any subtitles then.

How are both your movie video file and the subtitle file named?
-
Have you ‘Local Media Assets’ enabled under both
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
and
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
?
Yes I had it enabled and directed to the right folder. As for file names, the name of the video file was “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” the subtitle one being “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.en.ext” them being srt files. I even tried with underscores in the name instead of spaces

There are not folder related settings in the Agent preferences.
What are you referring to here?

Please give me the exact, actual file names please.
The video file cannot be just named
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
it must have a file name extension, like mp4 or mkv or such.
Disable Windows’s default hiding of file name extensions to make it easier to understand.
The subtitle file named
Rise of the Planet of the Apes.en.ext
would not fit to the above video file correct either.
If it is a SRT file, the ext
part must be srt
of course.
The following file pair will work (with Windows set to not hide file name extensions):
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011).mp4
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011).eng.srt
(you should always include the release year in parentheses to make ‘matching’ in Plex more reliable)
I even tried with underscores in the name instead of spaces
Don’t. That is not necessary and just ugly.

I did all that with the .mp4 and .eng.srt thing you mentioned and it still doesn’t work at all. There being no subtitles in parts with sign language

actually i might have gotten it to work. I checked the srt files using notepad++ and it shows scripted parts for the apes, although it’s at the 49 minute mark and only a few lines. I haven’t seen the movie in a good long while so I don’t remember if it was always a case of that’s the only parts that had onscreen subs for apes or not.
Tip: Subtitle Edit
Allows you to quickly check subs for validity, correct errors and resync them if necessary.
Will also convert SRTs to UTF-8.
