High Cpu use with subtitles

Hello

First of all. Great work with PlexConnect. Now I don't have to handbrake all MKVs to iTunes content anymore. Saving a lot of time and computer power.

Everything runs smoothly, but when I activate subtitles the fan go nuts after 5 min. or so. This only happens with MKVs and not Mp4/Mv4. When I look under "activity monitor" this "plex new transcoder" shows this WITHOUT subtitles.

Then when i use subtitles I get these activities.

How can CPU usage go from between 30-50 % to 300-350 % just because of use of subtitles.

When I run mv4 files this don't happened.

I need subtitles so what options do I have?

Are this going to be fixed?

What other options do I have?

My specs are

Macbook air mid 2012, with 1,8GHz i5

4 gb ram

Newest OS X

Apple TV 3

PMS 0.9.8.18.290

Latest PlexConnect

Thank you in advance for help

Without subtitles you most likely "direct stream" - only swap the container.

The subtitles get burned in to the video stream - PMS decodes the movie, adds the text, encodes it again...

m4v subtitles - if internal, they get overlaid by aTV, so PMS transcoder doesn't need to do anything.

Option: wait a bit longer, I am working to implement a subtitle renderer...

I would like to know how you get subtitles to work with m4v/mp4 files? I can only get the subtitles to work on m4v/mp4 if the transcoder is set to direct play. But then the movie skips. I am also seeing max CPU when using subtitles with mkv files. I am glad to here you have something in the works. Love plexconnect and you have done a great job developing it.

Check you have the latest PMS as i believe there are a number of fixes that have gone out related to subs.

Sounds awesome. Not to be unpaintient ;-), but do you think this is ready?

No, I don't think it's ready. Otherwise it would already be publicly available on github... :-D

Sounds awesome. Not to be unpaintient ;-), but WHEN do you think this is ready?

My pms is version 0.9.8.175-88ffbb2. DSM 4.3 The package center on my synology 1513+ says this package is up to date. Is there somewhere I can get the latest version of PMS for synology?

Thanks
Jonathan

This is how I solved it for myself.  I'm running on a DS1512+

Awesome! Thanks. I’ll get it updated and let you know if it fixes the subtitles on m4v/mp4 files.
