I have recently added some newer, higher quality versions of movies I had in my library, which I have done over the years before, I would set the filter to duplicates and then delete the old version.
Now, this isn’t happening, and while the movie is being detected correctly as the right movie, it has a different version of the cover art and is a separate entry.
Sounds like the movies are being matched with different agents. Have you changed agents on the library or upgraded it without refreshing all the metadata?
I have seen similar with my DVR Movie Library. First copy is placed by PLEX after commercials are removed and it’s returned to the .grab folder. My second copy is the original recording with it’s filename appended using “[orig]”. It is placed in the library folder with the first copy. First copy’s filename is then appended using “[sans]”. Prior behavior had been to show two “versions” of the title (blue numbers.) The order of events for renaming the files was deliberate as PLEX would play the last version to arrive.
Current behavior, as mentioned, has each file displayed as a separate title using different posters. Manually merging titles has been my solution.
I do not see this behavior in my other Movie Library when adding an additional copy. A new copy with an appended filename placed into the same folder will show up as a “version.” Even if the copies are Theatre vs. Unrated with different lengths, they stay together.
Both Libraries use Scanner=Plex Movie Scanner / Agent=Plex Movie (Legacy)
Scheduled Maintenance includes all update, refresh, and analyze tasks. I also just tried to “Refresh All Metadata” for that library. No Change.
There may be a difference in how the files are appended, using underscore vs. brackets. I was under the impression anything in brackets was ignored by PLEX. Filenames in my Movie Library are typically appended with an underscore and tend to merge automatically.
