Back when I got my HiSense TV 2 years ago, I looked into this. There was a comment on this forum from the Plex developers, saying that HiSense was responsible for the app install/versions, and had never worked with Plex to get a certified version, etc. So there is nothing Plex can do about this issue, it’s up to HiSense to push a new build of the app. I have these same issues. I set up DLNA on my Plex server, and I use the HiSense DLNA media player that’s included in order to play anything that the crappy Plex app can’t handle. This works fine, it’s just sad that the DLNA player has a klunky, ugly UI when Plex looks great but doesn’t work.
I just found this thread after searching in hopes that the situation has changed, but I can see it hasn’t
Yes the App is old, there is nothing that can be done about that.
Playback quality can be improved depending on your library. My files are mostly mkv H.264. If you go into the video settings the default max h.264 setting is 4.0, most files are much higher than that these days, change this setting to “none” and it will greatly improve the payback on any h.264 stuff later than 4.0
For H.265 as long as you have enough CPU for transcoding it should be acceptable viewing quality.
Having said all that - the FireStick is well priced (I got mine for $45 AUD just before christmas on sale) and has latest Plex apps available. If you enable CEC (remote sharing) in the settings of both devices the Hisense and Firestick work very well together with only the Hisense remote.
Firestick is not problem free, but Plex are working on that App and it’s improving a lot lately
Just bought a HiSense 65" U7 after having a Samsung 43" for about 3 years. I’ll add to the argument that its Plex app on the Hisense, as I’ve had a media library for years sitting on a WD MyCloud and everything ran wonderfully from it on via Samsung’s native folder. I discovered how much better PLEX was just before christmas after ugrading my NAS to a SYNOLOGY and installing PLEX, moving my library across at the same time. Again, Samsung PLEX app played everyhing I threw at it, with the bells and whistles that Plex offered. However, since upgrading to the Hisense I feel I’ve taken a step backwards. It doen’t even see the SYNOLOGY yet, (although the WD was instantly recognised), and playing via PLEX app is refusing far more video files because of the transcoding issues… Not too happy about this, I need to find a workaround as the TV is phenomenal apart from that.
