Horrible tone mapping when playing HDR content on SDR display

Using the enhanced player, I’m able to stream 1080p HDR to my Apple TV 4 (not 4k) without transcoding, however the colors are really bad on my 1080p SDR TV.

Here’s a comparison between the same scene with and without the enhanced player. Looks at Harrys hand for instance (sorry about the reflections, but you get the idea). Using the new enhanced player, it’s very very dark and backgrounds easily get very blocky and completely black.

Is this normal? Is there any way to configure it to behave better?
