How bad is plex

Emby exists and is very similar, do you see groups of folks leaving for it?
Plex has many issues that piss me off, but they’re still the best in the biz by far. Feel free to try alternatives.

Mine has been a long and mostly enjoyable multi-year journey. Much of the early pain was self-inflicted as I gained skill in prepping media. I also have gone through several iterations of client systems (started with HTPC, through Rokus & Pi until finding what I think is the best so far for me: Shield TV). Have a handful of remote users where at present, they all get pretty good service. That was a tough one to get right. Tried Kodi and didn’t care for the interface. Now with DVR & Live TV coming along nicely I finally got rid of the Tivos. Bottom line, I am in it for the long haul.

Lets just say the idea of the Plex ecosystem is awesome, but in practice, it is a constant struggle trying to get anything from the developers (who have been bought out by a big corporate who have their own agenda).

Wait, what? where was I for that? Plex is now owned by a big corporation? Details please.

It was not really a “corporation” but it was a three letter entity that begins with a “C” and is sometimes refereed to as “The Company.”

That explains increase in secretiveness we have seen in Plex over the last bit. >:) o:)

CIA… LOL.

Hum… Tell us more about that “serious funding” Really. From what I’ve seen there’s no info about a recent hedge fund: Plex - Crunchbase Company Profile & Funding.

That doesn’t include:
Plex Systems Secures $50 Million Round of Funding Led by T. Rowe Price, Joining Existing Investors Francisco Partners and Accel Partners

Not knocking, just adding maybe that’s what he was thinking.

So, they can’t read and don’t know that is a different company?

Now you’ve done it!! By actually using the name (or at least the acronym) you have condemned everyone in this thread to heightened scrutiny and surveillance. Every device we own that has a camera will now be randomly turned on and pictures of us watching TV in our underwear while drinking beer (or other refreshing beverage) will be archived for posterity.

Somewhere in Langley in a deep dark basement room (maybe several rooms) there will now be a whole system devoted to “Plex subversive users” and many of us will be subject to “enhanced airport security” up to and including the use of forced ■■■■ probes. (OK, so maybe it is not all bad for everyone.)

I guess it is a good thing I stopped traveling by plane some time ago. B)

I have been here since the beginning (changing user accounts once or twice during the years); still very glad to be using Plex and my purchase of a PlexPass Lifetime the very first day they announced it has been a very great deal!

However, it does seem to me that the team is somewhat running out of ideas - nothing/very little seems to be happening, and tuner stuff seems so 2008 to me. Am I wrong (I am not that much into the loop currently), @elan?

Live TV and auto quality all in just the last month. Pretty awesome.

How bad is it? Pretty bad for such an old project. Even worse for a payed product.
The problem is that there is no real competition. I don’t consider Emby real competition.
So dilemma: pay to be a beta tester or don’t pay and no money for devs to eventually, hopefully develop a stable platform.
So either stay free and don’t raise your expectations or pay and hope it will get better.

Or, some people read more into things than are actually there.
I seriously doubt many people read more than I do.
Thanks for your comments though.

Plex is awesome if you know what you are doing. However, I can make Plex look bad. Transcoding everything even when It’s on local net, putting my single band router back in place, disabling port aggregation on the NAS, don’t use any RAID, using remote NAS for storage, etc… Step number one might be a willingness to learn.

Don’t pay for it, you will be disappointed.

What?! Just don’t expect Plex to introduce a feature that hasn’t already been implemented yet, even if it’s high in demand. Be happy with what you have now.
But I really love being able to easily Sync files from my server to my phone for offline access. That feature is not available on a free account.

Used to be great, but as soon as something even remotely similar comes along, will see a mass exodus of long time users for sure.

Except that if people have already paid $200 for a lifetime Pass, they aren’t going to just drop Plex and leave unless something is better and more than worth the money to switch.

I couldn’t dis-agree more! If you use Plex software, why would you not want to help fund it with the equivalent cost of a Starbucks coffee or two each month? Surely you get more Pleasure and use from your software.

Good luck finding something else even close to being in the same league. Probably the next closest thing “emby” has it’s own share of problems and is far worse in many core features and most of their clients suck pretty badly.

Yes, I’d agree completely. It’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent. You can still purchase a lifetime PP for the cost of a nice dinner out for two and cocktails. PP will last a lot longer…

However, it does seem to me that the team is somewhat running out of ideas - nothing/very little seems to be happening, and tuner stuff seems so 2008 to me. Am I wrong (I am not that much into the loop currently), @elan?

Nothing could be further from the truth. Look at some of the current features being worked on and expanded that are new like expanded audio codecs, HLS, DASH, DVR, Live TV (cable and OTA), hardware encoding, auto adjusting bitrates, etc… For everyone one of these features being worked on there are probably 10 other almost as worthy upgrades in the pipeline. Plex isn’t going to be running out of ideas anytime soon!

looks at thread title

looks for ‘do not feed the trolls’ sign

As i can’t find my sign, I’ll bite. It got rough for a while in the very late 0.9’s and the first 1.x release or two, but it’s pretty good now. I look forward to TV being expanded to Rokus & Plex Web :sunglasses:

Of course stuff currently in beta or preview is coming . I don’t think you need us to state the obvious.

Point is don’t expect unannounced stuff to come in in the future. When new stuff is announced, great, but don’t start paying thinking you’ll get stuff that isn’t there now, that’s a great recipe for disappointment.

If you have a sample file and details which reproduces, we’d love to know about it. There’s not a pathological known issue I’m aware of.

This is complete bullshit. Nobody’s been bought, and it’s almost the same exact core group of people who run things, nearly ten years later.

Not trying to stir the pot, as this is a terrible troll thread. But there is a long going Plex for Android issue, with no solution in sight.

So, new stuff is no longer new stuff once it is announced or goes into beta or preview?

Of course ‘you’ will never see new stuff with that thinking! :#

Either I wasn’t clear or you misread me. There will be new stuff. People just shouldn’t be disappointed about paying because in 6 months they didn’t get whatever feature they were expecting. When you buy a Plexpass you should pay for what is offered now.

Not sure what you were trying to say when you mentionned DVR and live tv… They are coming, we all know it.
