How bad is plex

@KarlDag said:
Either I wasn’t clear or you misread me. There will be new stuff. People just shouldn’t be disappointed about paying because in 6 months they didn’t get whatever feature they were expecting. When you buy a Plexpass you should pay for what is offered now.

Not sure what you were trying to say when you mentionned DVR and live tv… They are coming, we all know it.

You were clear. I didn’t misread. My point is that you say no new things are coming … except for the new things that we already know are coming. You sound ridiculous!

You are that dude standing in the Wal-Mart checkout line yelling how much you hate Wal-Mart. Ridiculous!

Nobody should ever pay for any product or service expecting anything other than what is currently being offered. But, you are that guy overstating the obvious.

There is no way everyone is going to get every feature that they all want in six months, one year, six years, forever. Follow the process. Vote for the ones you want. Cross your fingers. Hope they happen. Pray to whoever you pray to for it to for your electronic enlightenments. But, until they are announced, don’t expect them. Oh yeah, once they are announced, they aren’t new anyway. So, we won’t count them.

Move on skippy!

Never said that, but I’m not going to be trolled any further. Have a good day.

There should be an expectation that the features we paid for continue to work. And unfortunately this isn’t always the case with Plex. I paid for Plex Pass so that our family could use the sync feature to listen to music on the go. And right now (for a while now) this feature isn’t working right on Android.

This doesn’t mean “how bad is plex”. But there is an expectation for long running features to continue to work.

Totally agree.

Haven’t used that feature. But, I personally think that my phone is my phone. I’d hate to have no battery because I was playing music on it and needed to make a call.

And, I am sure there are many features that I haven’t used. So, I don’t know when they are broke. But, what I use works. And, works well!

I still wish Plex would implement m4b support and album sync. I use it for audiobooks a LOT.

Have you voted for it in the Feature Request forum?

I actually see multiple threads that should be merged. But, since they aren’t, I’d hit each one if I were you.

Yes: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/57673/very-popular-remember-position-for-audiobooks/p1
and yes: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/122524/audiobook-library-option/p1
(those threads are ~4 and ~3 years old, respectively)

Already done that. I also already liked other audiobook threads in “General (Plex Pass)” and in “General (Third-Party Development)”, even though they aren’t in Feature Requests.

And that is the third time someone has asked me that after my mentioning my interest in it. I don’t feel like liking posts in Feature Requests does a damn thing, given that NO ONE ASKED FOR A NEWS FEED.

As far as I know we never paid for any features. Plex Pass only guarantees access to some extra features, it does not guarantee that any feature will work at any given moment in time.

Having said that one of my big complaints about Plex is their continual adding of “features” that are either half baked or incomplete or just buggy. They also add features that introduce bugs and even adversely impact previously working systems.
The saying:
"“If debugging is the process of removing bugs, then programming must be the process of putting them in.” by Edsger W. Dijkstra
seems to apply to a lot of what Plex does and they often seem to put excessive emphasis on the “… putting them in” part of the equation.

I love Plex BUT I think Plex needs to try harder to have everything they have working correctly and not try so hard to be everything to everybody.

Many years ago I instructed programming for a few years and one of my standard questions was “What is the most important thing a program can do?” The answer was of course “Work correctly.” It sometimes seem that Plex, and a LOT of other companies for that matter, forget the importance of those two words and spend an inordinate amount of time and effort on “pretty” and “do everything” while “functionality” takes a back seat.

So, based on the rules, those mean nothing. Are the Plex people keeping to the rules? I have no idea. I guess it can’t hurt to over like

Yes–no, they mean nothing per the rules.

Plex spent buckets of money buying an aggregated news video feed company ( https://www.plex.tv/blog/we-have-news/ ) because some executive at a roundtable meeting expressed interest in the Haystack app. No one else requested it; Very, very few people care to use a personal media server for news; and yet they don’t support (album) syncing or m4b support for audiobooks when it’s been (high) on the list for years.

Plex looks at those likes BUT if it does not fit into Plex’s grand plant it will never happen.

I hold little hope that true audiobook will ever happen but it never hurts to wish.

The “rules” are Plex’s and they have no real compulsion to follow them and they can change or ignore them as they choose. They should not really be thought of as “rules” but rather loose guidelines wheer the line is moving when and where Plex wants it to.

i am happy to fund plex for 30% stock but I need some things done code ready

Don’t pay for it, you will be disappointed.

What?! Just don’t expect Plex to introduce a feature that hasn’t already been implemented yet, even if it’s high in demand. Be happy with what you have now.
But I really love being able to easily Sync files from my server to my phone for offline access. That feature is not available on a free account.

Used to be great, but as soon as something even remotely similar comes along, will see a mass exodus of long time users for sure.

Except that if people have already paid $200 for a lifetime Pass, they aren’t going to just drop Plex and leave unless something is better and more than worth the money to switch.

Really? I have held a PlexPass for years now, but after such rude performance by a forum member tagged as an ‘Employee’ I revisited Emby. I used to check in on the Emby project every 6-12 months. Then I got too comfortable. It was announced Alexa support was on Plex. I geo-hopped and it worked great. I set up equipment for handicapped people, mostly Quads, I had them grab Canadian Echos on debut, now nobody knew Amazon would slap up a geofence and kill that skill.

I wrote in the PlexPass forums, and asked no less than 4 times about turning on the skill in Canada. In November, one employee wrote it was submitted for approval to Amazon. Fast forward to mid January, Yeah i asked again.

Some idiot named BigWheel blasted off an abrasive post. It ended with something like ‘it will be ready when it’s ready and not a moment sooner’

He was an ***hole. He represents Plex. Look you got my money, and I used your product Plex, what you won’t be getting any further is recommendations to my clients to install AND PAY FOR your software.

Emby has caught up, they have the same features, but a richer interface, collections, the Favourites section is a gift. Works flawlessly with Kodi. The web interface is beautiful, and it scrapes my collection better than Plex ever did.

Funny, their Echo support isn’t in Canada yet either, but it’s coming, and they were transparent and polite about it. Their support employees don’t treat members, especially pass holders like ■■■■ either. BigWheel should be let go, or at least removed as employee in the forums.

Sometimes, it’s not the product that causes people to leave, sometimes, it’s assholes doing the support, and a team of managers not doing their jobs to keep them in line.

This will be the 5th Emby install and licence purchase since the altercation, a drop in the bucket to Plex I’m sure, but it does all add up.

I hope this reaches the CEO. No use throwing away money and goodwill over an asshole employee.

Sincerely

Ray

Dude you need THICKER SKIN! Give it a rest, you’re probably one of the Entitlement Group.
Your Plex Pass gives you the right to use their beta software, Nothing More!

Plex has some issues but overall is a great product. I love it and use it to consume 90% of the media in my house.

For me not a single Plex Pass feature works properly.
I finally figured out the Plex Update channel was nothing more than a “I Pay For” Testing Plex releases some time ago.
Therefore, I quit installing them.

THAT solution went far to improve Plex’s reliability.
Additionally beta testing for Plex is a rather hit and miss task anyway. Most issues go ignored by Plex employees anyway.

With that being said, Plex’s core function as a media player is worth the cost of a PP membership alone.

jjrjr1, I think you are confusing Plex Pass Features and Beta releases.

PP gives you the ability to also run a beta release before it’s finalized for release status so of course it will tend to have more issues. Nature of the beast. If you don’t want to help find issues or get a heads up on the upcoming release you don’t need to run that release. It’s completely optional.

But that’s an option and not a PP feature. PP features would be stuff such as HOME, Cloud, DVR, Live TV, mobile & cloud sync, camera upload, premium music, etc

Sad but true.

All the features I’m interested in are barely usable:

  • Login: doesn’t work any more on Firefox since about 1 month. Only Chrome works
  • Playback: I’m streaming to a HTPC with a powerfull NVIDIA card … it transcodes!!!
  • Jumping back/forward: sometimes it works, sometimes it hangs … forever!!!
  • Sync: never ever worked for me without trouble. It’s basically vapourware
  • DVR: 100% recording bug
  • Photos: browse by folder has been removed. Displaying a photo (on a GBit LAN!!!) takes up to a minute
  • Server load: server never stays idle. There’s always a plex process that utilizes 1 core 100%

And so on. And so on.

By now, January 2018, it’s just far to many annoyances. And still there is no feedback from Plex, no bug fixes, no sign that they take the problems seriously. But hey, we got VR now!!!

I don’t care about any of those listed features except Mobile Sync. Mobile Sync works fine most of the time, except for certain ongoing issues specific to Android.
