I replaced Emby with plex last week and my family are now all getting used to plex but keep asking where is the “On Deck” or “Continue Watching” or “Next Up” and I have to keep saying I don’t know!
I have played with all the settings I can find, what am I missing? I would have thought that you would be able to have these/this feature available on the home screen?
“Continue Watching” is normally the first hub on the Home screen.
It relies on your tv shows being properly “matched” to the Plex TV Series metadata agent, which in turn relies on your tv shows being added into a library of the type “TV Shows”. And that again requires your files to be organized into folders and subfolders, and the media files to be named in a certain way: Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support
Only then will the next episode of a tv show automatically appear in “Continue Watching”.
(You will never see Movies in CW, unless they have been only half-watched.)
The libraries which shall appear on the home page (and thus in CW) need to be “pinned” to the left side bar.
The libraries in question must also not be explicitly banned from the home screen (edit the properties of each library, the relevant setting “Visibility” is on the “Advanced” tab)
If you are re-watching a tv show (i.e. one which is marked as “watched” on every episode for your user account) you should manually mark the whole show as “unwatched” before starting the re-run.
All of the above is only available in current, “real” Plex client apps. Category : Player Apps and Platforms | Plex Support
You won’t find it in a generic DLNA-compatible player (which are included in most smart TVs and streaming boxes by default)
My libraries are organised perfectly (I have been doing this since the days Windows Media Center, have revisited plex several times over the years and have library OCD!
The problem was the TV Shows library not being pinned! I have to say firstly thank you! but IMO that was not very intuitive but maybe that is just me, nevertheless, thank you I am happy it is working now
Sorry to be a pain, but although the continue watching is now showing, how do I get to see “Next Up” For example I have watched 4 episodes of a series and would like to watch number 5, what would I do to get plex to display that without searching for the series?
Ok, so why are next episodes of series I am watching not being displayed? I have about 4 or 5 shows I am watching that have more episodes I have not seen yet, I can only see shows that I am half way through an episode.
take a look in Settings - Server - Library - ‘Show Advanced’ - “Weeks to consider for Continue Watching”. The default value is 16.
go to the top level of a show which is supposed to appear in CW.
Are there any seasons or episodes shown with the orange box and a number in the upper-right corner of the poster?
If there are none, the show is considered as completely “watched”. This relates to what I mentioned about “re-watching” in my first response.
Click on the ellipsis … and then “View Play History”.
Is the latest playback event dated within the period defined in 1) ? Is it a valid/reasonable date at all?
examine the detail page of an episode which is supposed to appear in CW. Does it have a date shown as “Released”?
I think this is due to the “re-watch” you mentioned earlier. Due to moving from emby it was easier to mark a whole show as watched and then mark unwatched to the seasons I have yet to watch in a vain attempt to sync my watched status to plex. I have to run out now but I have got it working on a completely unwatched show, so I will investigate properly when I get back,
Ah, yes, that is an issue plaguing my family member. She watches certain shows over and over, so the continue watching doesn’t work well for shows marked as “PLAYED”. I’ve been trying to teach her that if she wants to start over, it’s simple to just mark it all as “UNPLAYED” and Plex will work like it did the first time, showing the “Up Next” episode in Continue Watching.
Edit: I almost wish there was a setting to automatically mark a 100% “PLAYED” show as “UNPLAYED” automatically a day or two after they finish it. I might have to set up a script to scan my database and do that for me… That, or if the server could make a 100% played show use continue watching if you start watching again.
